Cadillac uses GM's immobilizer platform, which means your 2013 Cadillac ATS has a transponder chip that communicates with the body control module every time you start the car. On older models it's an ID46 chip in the PK3+ system. On newer ones it's an ID49 with heavier encryption. The concept is the same. The car challenges the chip, the chip responds with a code, and the engine fires only if the codes match. That's why a hardware store blade copy turns the lock but won't start the engine.
A customer at Sam's Club in Vista thought only the dealer could handle that security handshake on her 2013 Cadillac ATS.
