How the SRX Key System Changed Over the Years
First Generation (GMT280)
A transponder key with a Megamos ID48 chip (2004-2006) or a Philips ID46/PCF7936 chip (2007-2009), paired with GM's PK3+ immobilizer. The car checks the chip inside the key every time you turn the ignition. We program these through the OBD-II port, and the whole job takes about 30 minutes at your curb.
First Generation Facelift
The 2010-2011 second-generation SRX launched with a remote head key carrying the Philips ID46 chip and a high-security blade. Cadillac upgraded the immobilizer and the cut profile in one swing. Programming requires the GM SPS subscription and the right HU100 blank, which is exactly the combo Marco's van pulls into Encinitas with already loaded.
Second Generation (K9)
It is where security got serious. Cadillac moved to a smart key fob with a Philips PCF7952 (Hitag2) chip, push-button start, and a laser-cut emergency blade. Programming requires server authentication, meaning the key has to be verified through GM's online system before your SRX will accept it.
Second Generation Facelift
The 2013-2016 SRX runs a Philips PCF7952 (Hitag2 family) chip in a push-button-start smart fob with passive entry. The blade still folds in the housing as the emergency override. Server-level pairing required for any new fob. The 2016 was the final year before the XT5 replaced the SRX on the new C1 platform.
Which Key Does Your SRX Use?
The 2004-2009 SRX key: traditional metal blade with a remote head holding lock, unlock, panic, and (on some years) liftgate buttons. PK3 or PK3+ Megamos ID48 transponder chip inside the head. CR2032 battery powers the remote. The blade turns to start, the chip authenticates to the BCM.
The 2010-2011 SRX key looks like a beefier remote head with a thicker housing and a HU100 high-security laser-cut blade. Philips ID46 chip inside the head. Same crank-the-blade-to-start workflow as the first gen, but with a totally different cut profile and a different chip family.
The 2012-2013 SRX moved to a push-button-start smart fob. Thick black housing, no blade visible from the outside (it folds into the housing as an emergency override), four buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, remote start), Philips ID46 chip handling the immobilizer side. Server-auth programming required.
The 2014-2016 SRX runs the same push-button-start concept as the 2012-2013 with an updated fob design. Four buttons, hidden emergency blade, Philips PCF7952 (Hitag2 family) chip. Programming workflow is structurally the same: GM SPS over OBD2 with the live VIN handshake.
SRX Key Replacement Pricing
Every SRX price includes the right blank (B107 PK3, HU100 high-security, or smart fob depending on year), cutting, transponder or smart-fob pairing, and on-the-spot testing at your San Diego location. No hidden fees, no second-trip charges.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
All keys lost on an SRX? The dealer needs a flatbed to Kearny Mesa, three to five business days in the queue, and a four-figure quote before parts. The van needs about an hour curbside in Rancho Bernardo and prices the job up front.
Common SRX Key Problems
Transponder Sync Failure
On a 2004-2009 SRX, cranks but will not start, or security light stays on. Usually a battery replacement or module glitch knocked the transponder out of sync. Full OBD-II key relearn resets the chip (Megamos ID48 or Philips ID46) to the PK3/PK3+ immobilizer.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Poor battery-compartment contact is the culprit, and humid coastal air around Solana Beach and Carmel Mountain Ranch makes it worse. Your 2010-2013 remote head or smart fob eats CR2032s faster than it should. We check contacts, clean or replace, confirm.
Proximity Sensor Glitch
First diagnostic move on your 2012-2016 SRX is the door handle sensor. Grab the handle, nothing. Press start, no response. Most assume the fob is dead. Usually the sensor needs cleaning or replacement, not the key. We test fob signal strength first.
Laser Blade Wear
Owners think the smart key fob is failing when the real problem is a worn emergency blade. Laser-cut blades on 2012-2016 SRX wear fast on daily drivers, especially with regular manual cylinder use. Cuts get shallow, blade will not turn. We cut curbside.
Can You Program an SRX Key Yourself?
No self-programming exists on the 2004-2009 SRX. The PK3/PK3+ Megamos ID48 chip pairing requires an OBD2 scanner with GM PK3 protocol support and a valid SPS handshake. Marco's van carries both. With one or zero working keys, the procedure is structurally the same job, just longer if we are starting from scratch.
If you have one working remote head key on the 2010-2011 SRX, you can add the remote buttons on a new fob with the door-cylinder cycle (insert blade, lock-unlock-lock five times). The transponder side still needs the SPS subscription and the van. The HU100 blade has to be cut by code or by lock decode either way.
On the 2012-2016 SRX smart fob, you can pair the proximity functions yourself if you already have two working fobs: emergency blade in the door, lock-unlock-lock five times within thirty seconds. The chip side that actually starts the SUV still needs GM server authentication and the van.
Same process as the 2012-2013 models. You can handle the proximity pairing at home, but the immobilizer programming requires GM server authentication. We bring the VVDI tools to connect to that server from wherever you are in San Diego County.

San Diego Trivia
Quick history: the 2012 SRX was the first Cadillac crossover to use a proximity smart key with an encrypted Megamos transponder, the same chip family showing up in European luxury sedans at the time. Cadillac borrowed a page from the German playbook and dropped it into an American crossover, which is why SRX key work from 2012 forward demands more equipment than the early models.
