2009 Cadillac SRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Sometimes significantly more, and it's not just the price -- it's the complexity. When you have a working key, adding a spare on the 2009 SRX is a relatively quick job. The system sees the existing key as trusted and the enrollment process is cleaner. When all keys are gone, the immobilizer has no reference point. The procedure requires security access, a full reset of the key memory, and re-enrollment from scratch.

Q: Do aftermarket keys work on the 2009 Cadillac SRX, and are they worth it?

They can work, but there's a quality range and it matters. The 2009 SRX uses a transponder key, and the chip inside has to be the correct type and spec for the immobilizer to accept it. A blank from a reputable automotive supply source, cut and programmed correctly, will typically function fine for daily use. The issue with cheap aftermarket blanks off retail marketplaces is build quality on the key head and blade.

Q: My 2009 SRX cranks but shuts off immediately after starting. Is that a key problem?

That pattern -- cranks, fires briefly, then dies -- is a classic sign the immobilizer isn't recognizing the key. The engine management system sees an unverified transponder and shuts fuel or spark down almost instantly as a theft deterrent response. This can happen for a few reasons on the 2009 SRX. The chip in the key may have failed, which does happen on older keys that have taken some wear. The key may have been copied incorrectly at some point.

Q: I have two keys for my 2009 SRX but only one of them starts the car. Can the second one be programmed without going to the dealer?

Yes, and that's one of the more common calls I get. Someone has a cut spare that was never enrolled, or a key that dropped out of the system at some point. As long as one key is still recognized by the immobilizer, adding the second is a clean job done at your location. No dealer trip, no tow. Done in your driveway in The Crosby the same day you call.

2009 Cadillac SRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a house in The Crosby, over in Rancho Santa Fe, on a weekday morning. The owner had a 2009 SRX sitting in the driveway and one key that wasn't doing what it was supposed to.

He'd had a spare made somewhere along the way -- one of those situations where the spare got cut correctly but never programmed, so it turned the ignition and did absolutely nothing else. Engine cranked, died, cranked, died. Classic immobilizer rejection.

He'd been told by a friend that Cadillacs need to go to the dealer for key work. He wasn't thrilled about that. He was looking at burning half a day driving out and waiting, and his schedule didn't have room for it.

I pulled up, got into the system through the OBD port, and enrolled the spare key. The whole thing took under an hour including the time I spent checking that the original key was still reading correctly so he'd have a confirmed working backup.

He had two programmed keys when I left. That's the outcome that actually protects you -- one key in your pocket and one somewhere safe at home. The dealer conversation never really came up. He just seemed glad he didn't have to go anywhere.

Cadillac SRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2009 Cadillac SRX key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Dealers have overhead, parts markups, and a labor rate that doesn't care how simple your job is. For a 2009 SRX transponder key, you're looking at a cut-and-programmed key done at your location for a fraction of what the dealer quotes. No tow required if you still have one working key, and even all-keys-lost can be handled on site.
