That pattern, cranks and starts then dies within a second or two, is a classic sign that the immobilizer is not fully recognizing the transponder chip in the key. The engine management system gets just enough signal to fire but cuts fuel or spark almost immediately when it does not get a clean read from the chip.

It can mean the chip itself has failed, or it can mean the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is not reading properly. On a vehicle this age, corrosion or a loose connection at that antenna ring is a real possibility. It can also point to the ignition switch not holding the correct position, which was a known issue on early SRX models.

Can I buy a replacement transponder key online and program it myself for a 2004 SRX?
