2004 Cadillac SRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: The Cadillac dealer told me to tow my SRX in for a replacement key. Do I actually have to do that?

No. Dealers say that because their process requires the car in their service bay. Mine does not. I come to wherever the SRX is sitting, cut the blade on site, and program the transponder chip through the OBD port right there. No tow bill, no drop-off, no waiting for a service appointment to open up. Towing adds real cost to your day before the dealer even looks at the key. Skip that whole chain and call me instead.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle before you make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, which is your registration or title. I also confirm the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on the SRX before I cut or program anything. That verification step is standard practice whether you go through a locksmith or a dealer. Having your paperwork ready when I arrive keeps the job moving without any delays.

Q: My 2004 SRX starts fine but stalls almost immediately after. Is that a key or transponder problem?

That pattern, cranks and starts then dies within a second or two, is a classic sign that the immobilizer is not fully recognizing the transponder chip in the key. The engine management system gets just enough signal to fire but cuts fuel or spark almost immediately when it does not get a clean read from the chip. It can mean the chip itself has failed, or it can mean the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is not reading properly.

Q: Can I buy a replacement transponder key online and program it myself for a 2004 SRX?

The blade part, yes, a locksmith or a hardware store can cut that. The chip programming is a different story. The 2004 SRX transponder system requires a tool that can write to the immobilizer through the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn sequence or DIY relearn trick built into this vehicle for adding a new transponder key. If you bought a blank online, it still needs a professional with the right equipment to actually pair the chip to the car.

2004 Cadillac SRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked along the Cedros Design District strip on a Tuesday afternoon, finishing up notes from a previous call, when a new one came in.

A guy near there had one working key left on his 2004 Cadillac SRX and wanted a spare cut and programmed before that last key died on him. Smart thinking. All-keys-lost on a vehicle this age is a longer job, and he already knew that somehow.

He met me at his building. The SRX is a mid-size SUV, so there was plenty of room to work with the door panel and the ignition in a comfortable position. I decoded the key cut from the door lock cylinder and got the blade cut to match. Then came the transponder programming through the OBD port. The immobilizer learned the new chip, I cycled the ignition a few times to confirm it was reading consistently, and we tested it cold.

The whole thing took about 35 minutes on site. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause before even asking about availability. I told him what I charged. He just nodded.

He kept his original key, walked away with a working spare, and never had to leave the building.

Cadillac SRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out of my 2004 Cadillac SRX with no spare. Can you come to me in Solana Beach?▼

Yes. That is exactly the call I handle. If you are near the Cedros Design District or anywhere else in Solana Beach, I come to you with the tools and key blanks needed for your SRX on site. You do not need a tow, you do not need to wait on hold with roadside assistance, and you do not need to drop the vehicle at a dealer for a multi-day turnaround.
