How the XT5 Key System Has Changed
1st Generation (C1XX)
The 2017-2019 XT5 launched the C1 platform with the HYQ2EB 5-button smart fob and the Philips ID46 GM EXT chip. Server authentication is required for programming, which means we connect to GM's SPS in real time over the van's mobile data and pair the chip against your live VIN. CR2032 inside, not rechargeable.
1st Gen Facelift (C1XX)
The 2020-2021 XT5 carries forward the same C1 platform but switched to the HYQ2ES fob housing with the Cadillac crest update. Programming workflow is the same: GM SPS over OBD2 with live VIN handshake. Marco's van handles a 2020 XT5 in Carlsbad the same way it handled a 2017 in Oceanside.
1st Gen Facelift 2 (C1XX)
The 2022-2023 XT5 facelift refreshed the front fascia and infotainment but left the HYQ2ES smart fob and Philips ID46 GM EXT immobilizer unchanged. Server-level programming still required, same CR2032 battery, same emergency blade tucked in the housing.
1st Gen Refresh (C1XX)
The 2024-2025 XT5 carries the same HYQ2ES fob and the same Philips ID46 GM EXT chip. GM's current SPS subscription tier is mandatory for any new fob pairing. We keep the subscription current so Marco's van rolls into Rancho Santa Fe with the right tooling and the right access already loaded.
Which Key Does Your XT5 Use?
The 2017-2019 XT5 fob: black 5-button proximity (FCC HYQ2EB) with the Cadillac crest, hidden laser-cut emergency blade in the housing, push-button start, passive entry. Philips ID46 GM EXT chip authenticates to the BCM. CR2032 battery, not rechargeable despite the persistent myth.
The 2020-2025 XT5 fob (FCC HYQ2ES) carries the same physical 5-button layout as the earlier years with refreshed plating on the Cadillac crest. Same Philips ID46 GM EXT chip, same CR2032, same emergency blade. Programming is functionally identical job-to-job for us.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Every XT5 price includes the right fob blank (HYQ2EB or HYQ2ES depending on year), HU100 emergency blade cutting, server-auth transponder programming through GM SPS, and on-the-spot testing at your San Diego location. No hidden fees, no markup on the battery.
Us vs. the Dealer
Same fob hardware, same Philips ID46 GM EXT chip, same SPS server authentication. The dealer in Kearny Mesa just bills you for the flatbed to get there and the shop time once it arrives. Our work is guaranteed, you skip both bills, and the van rolls to wherever the XT5 sits.
Common XT5 Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
XT5 owners assume the fob is broken when it is actually battery drain. The rechargeable battery in your smart key talks to proximity sensors constantly. That handshake wears the battery faster than expected. Fob dies repeatedly? We test the charge cycle.
Immobilizer Sync Failure
First diagnostic move on a 2017-2021 XT5 that cranks but will not start is transponder sync between key and ECM. Dead car battery or jump can knock the PKM immobilizer out of alignment. We run a full ECM/PKM relearn with MDI2 curbside, no tow.
Proximity Sensor False Triggers
Faulty door-handle proximity sensors on the XT5 cause passive entry to fail to unlock, or fire the immobilizer and lock the engine out. We diagnose sensors with our scanner first: a $40 sensor should not get sold as a $400 fob job. Common in Coronado.
Push-Start Button Failure
Press the start button and nothing. Maybe it works on the third try. Usual culprits on the XT5: weak CR2032 first, then the BCM antenna behind the dash going out of range, then the start-button microswitch wearing out. We test all three in Mira Mesa.
Can You Program an XT5 Key Yourself?
If you have at least one working XT5 fob, GM's 30-minute three-cycle relearn lets you pair a second one yourself. Insert the emergency blade in the driver door, lock-unlock-lock five times within thirty seconds, then run the ignition cycle. The procedure works on every year, but it does demand a fresh pre-cut HU100 blade to start.
If you already have two working XT5 smart keys, adding a third is much simpler. The door-cylinder five-cycle method pairs the remote functions in under a minute. The transponder side that actually fires the engine still wants GM server authentication, which Marco's van rolls to your Encinitas curb with.

San Diego Trivia
In 2017 Cadillac pulled a quiet move with the XT5: it shipped Keyless Access alongside Electronic Precision Shift, replacing the traditional gear lever with a row of buttons on the console. The cockpit-feel was deliberate. It also forced a key-system redesign because the start logic now had to coordinate with a buttoned shifter rather than a mechanical PRNDL.
