A driver out in Harbison Canyon called me on a weekday morning. He had his 2025 XT5 parked in the driveway and the fob was doing almost nothing. Doors would not respond to the handle sensors, the start button was throwing a key-not-detected warning, and he had already done the obvious thing: swapped the CR2032 the night before. Fresh battery and the same problem.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could see it had been pried open at some point, not cleanly. The battery contacts inside were slightly bent outward, which meant even a brand-new cell was not making solid contact. A fob that reads intermittently at close range is one of those failures that looks like a dead key but is actually a mechanical issue inside the housing.
I seated the battery correctly, reformed the contact clips so they actually gripped the cell, and cleaned the contact surfaces. Then I did the full walk: handle sensors on both sides, start button response, every button function, and confirmed the immobilizer was reading the key properly with the scan tool.
He had been quoted a full key replacement by the dealer, which would have meant a tow to the dealer lot in addition to the key cost. He did not need a new fob. He needed the one he had to make proper contact. Job was done on site, in the driveway, in Harbison Canyon, for a fraction of what they wanted.
He said the dealer did not even ask what was happening with the fob. They just went straight to replacement.
