I got a call from a woman over in La Mesa Village, parked outside the pet boarding facility off Allison Avenue. She had just dropped off her dog, walked back to the XT5, and the fob stopped responding. Door handles were not unlocking on approach, start button was not seeing the key. The vehicle security system stops seeing the key intermittently before the battery fails outright, which makes it feel like the fob is broken when the battery is just tired.
Swapped the CR2032, reseated it, and did a door walk. Proximity unlock came back on both fronts, the start button responded, and every remote function checked out. She did not need a new fob at all.
The second fob was the real job. I programmed that one through the diagnostic port so she would have a tested, registered spare going forward. She had been driving a two-fob vehicle for months with only one working key and did not realize it.
The dealer had quoted her a wait time of several days just to get the spare programmed, on top of what she described as a number that made her pause. I was done in under forty minutes, parked right where she needed me.
