Over near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, a woman called me at about 8:15 in the morning. She was already at her office lot. She had an insurance client coming in at nine and her XT5 was sitting there not responding to anything. Push-button start was dead. Fob buttons were doing nothing. She had tried holding the fob up to the start button, which is the right instinct, and still nothing.
I was there in about twenty minutes.
The first thing I did was get inside using the emergency blade in the fob, which she did not know was in there. That small moment, showing someone that the mechanical key is literally hiding in the fob they've been carrying for two years, always lands the same way. A little laugh, a little disbelief.
Once inside, I connected through the OBD port and pulled up the security system. The fob had a communication fault logged, and the battery was borderline. On this generation of XT5, a weak battery does not always just reduce range. It can throw the fob into a state where the vehicle stops trusting it entirely. Swapped the CR2032, cleared the fault, re-registered the fob through the diagnostic link. Tested every function: door handles, start button, liftgate, lock and unlock. Everything behaved.
Hands-on time was around twenty minutes. She was in her car and on her way before 9.
She mentioned the dealer was already on hold. I did not ask what they quoted.
