I got a call from a guy out near Peutz Valley in Alpine. He was parked at the Elks lodge and he was done. Not frustrated-done. Resigned-done. The kind of quiet where someone has already spent money and gotten nothing for it.
He'd paid another locksmith earlier that week to program a replacement smart key for his 2007 Cadillac STS. The key turned over the engine fine. Then the car ran for about two seconds and died. The module doesn't commit it permanently, and the security system kills the engine on startup every time.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed key data from the system, and ran a clean all-keys-lost procedure from scratch with the full security timer allowed to complete. Confirmed the key was permanently stored before I disconnected anything. Then I started the car three times in a row, watching for fuel cutoff. Nothing. Clean starts, all three.
He had already paid the first locksmith. I couldn't undo that. But I could make sure the job was actually finished, and he drove home that afternoon.
The dealer comparison almost came up. He mentioned it. I told him my number was a fraction of what the dealer quoted him, and we moved on.
