How Sebring Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (FJ)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward, because there is nothing to program. Your first-gen Sebring uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer. You lose it, we cut a new one curbside and you are driving again in minutes.
2nd Generation (JR)
On-board programming and OBD-II both work here, depending on how many keys you have. Chrysler added the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) with an ID46 transponder chip inside a remote head key. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic, standard blade, CR2032 battery. We pull the PIN through the OBD port and program your new key right in the driveway.
3rd Generation (JS)
On-board programming is still possible with two working keys for adding a transponder, but full programming requires OBD-II and sometimes server authentication. Chrysler upgraded to the SKREEM module with a Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip and a high-security blade. The key comes as a remote head or flip key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery. This generation takes a bit more work, but we handle it curbside with the right tools.
Which Key Does Your Sebring Use?
Plain metal key with no chip and no buttons. The easiest and cheapest Sebring key to replace.
A chunky key head with lock, unlock, and panic buttons. There is an ID46 chip inside that talks to your Sentry Key module every time you turn the ignition.
A remote head or flip-style key with a high-security blade and a Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip. Three buttons, same CR2032 battery, but the blade and programming are more advanced than the previous generation.
What Your Sebring Key Costs
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and a full test of ignition start and remote functions before we leave.

Common Sebring Key Problems
Sentry Key Failure
People assume the battery is dead when the Sebring cranks but will not start and the security light is on. Real problem is usually Sentry Key failing to read the transponder on 2001-2010 models, from a weak chip signal or failing SKIM/SKREEM. We test both.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First diagnostic move on a dead remote: the CR2032 compartment for corrosion. Chrysler fobs from 2001-2010 are notorious for battery leakage that eats the contacts. Clean contacts mean a fresh battery fixes it. Corroded? We may salvage the board or replace.
Worn Ignition Cylinder
Mechanical wear inside the ignition cylinder makes your key stick, feel gritty, or refuse to turn. Common on high-mileage 1995-2006 Sebrings. We see this in Pacific Beach and Encinitas on 150K-plus daily drivers. Fix is ignition cylinder replacement.
SKIM/SKREEM Module Fault
When the SKREEM module in your 2007-2010 Sebring is corrupted, it stops recognizing every key. Needs PIN retrieval and full reprogramming. We carry Autel IM608 and VVDI Key Tool Plus to pull the PIN through OBD and reprogram curbside.
Can You Program a Sebring Key Yourself?
No transponder, no immobilizer, no programming. You just need a correctly cut mechanical key.
You can program a remote fob yourself using the unlock-panic button sequence if you have at least one working remote. But the transponder chip in the key itself requires an OBD-II tool and PIN extraction. That part needs a locksmith.
Remote programming works the same way as the second gen, using the unlock-panic method with a working remote. If you have two working transponder keys, you can add a third using Chrysler's 2-key add procedure. If you are down to one key or zero keys, you need professional OBD-II programming.

San Diego Trivia
Quick history: the Sebring's Sentry Key was one of Chrysler's first widespread immobilizer rollouts, and it knocked theft rates down by more than 50% on equipped trims. For a mid-tier sedan that most owners bought for the convertible top, that is a quietly impressive security legacy hiding under the fabric.
