A woman over in Fairbanks Ranch called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She had one key to her 2004 Chrysler Sebring, had owned it for a couple of years since buying it used, and had always meant to get a spare cut. She never did. That Tuesday the key snapped, part of it still stuck in the door lock cylinder.
She wasn't panicked, more resigned. She told me she knew this was coming. The key had been bending slightly every time she used the door lock for the last few months and she kept ignoring it.
I drove out to her place in Fairbanks Ranch. First thing was extracting the broken blade from the cylinder without damaging the lock, which went clean. Then I read the transponder chip from the broken key head. It was intact. That mattered because on the 2004 Sebring, the immobilizer stores key data and the chip in that old key still held valid information I could work from. I didn't have to run an all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and requires a few extra steps at the diagnostic port.
I decoded the lock, cut two new key blades to her vehicle, programmed both transponder chips through the OBD port, and confirmed each one started the car and that the security light cleared properly after cranking.
She had two working keys in about 45 minutes. She held them both for a second and said she was going to hide one in the house immediately, which is exactly what I told her to do.
The dealer had quoted her over the phone for a single key, parts and programming. She paid a fraction of that for two keys, done on her driveway.
