2000 Chrysler Sebring
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Sebring to the dealer just to get a key made?

Not for a 2000 Sebring. This is a straight mechanical key - no module programming, no dealer-only software required. A qualified locksmith can decode the lock or source the key code from the VIN and cut a working key right at your location. The dealer can do it too, but that route means scheduling time and often a tow if you have no working key at all. We come to the car. Same result, a lot less hassle.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you can make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership - registration or title works. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb before I cut anything. That is standard practice whether you go to a locksmith or a dealer. It protects you as much as it protects me. The whole verification step takes about two minutes on site.

Q: My 2000 Sebring ignition is getting stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is the lock worn out or is it the key?

Usually both, on a car this age. After 25 years the wafers inside the ignition cylinder wear down and the key itself can get slight bends or rounded edges from daily use. A worn key in a worn cylinder makes each one worse. If you are feeling real resistance or the key is sticking at the start position, get the key inspected before the cylinder fails completely.

Q: I found a copy of my Sebring key at the bottom of a drawer but it does not look quite right. Can you tell if it will work?

Bring it out and I will check the cuts against the lock. Duplicate keys made at hardware stores are sometimes cut shallow or off-center, and those copies work fine at first then start slipping as the cylinder wears. Takes about two minutes to compare a suspect key against the proper bitting. If it is off, I cut a correct one right there.

2000 Chrysler Sebring Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Brown Field Area, I got a call from a guy who had locked his only key inside his 2000 Chrysler Sebring. He was standing in an apartment parking lot in about 95-degree heat. Not a great afternoon.

He had already called the dealer. They told him to have it towed in and they could look at it in a few days. He did not have a tow. He did not have a few days. He had work in the morning and a car he could not get into.

I drove out to him. Got the door open, then decoded the lock cylinder right there in the lot. Read the cuts, trimmed a blank to match, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Turned over clean on the first try.

He stood there for a second like he was waiting for something else to go wrong. Nothing did.

No tow. No waiting at a dealership. Done on site for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him, and he had his car back before the sun went down.
