1997 Chrysler Sebring
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 1997 Sebring to the dealer for a new key?

No. This generation Sebring uses a mechanical ignition key with no electronic enrollment required. A dealer would simply cut a key to the vehicle, the same thing I do at your location. Towing it anywhere is unnecessary cost for a job that gets done on the spot. Call me instead.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb before cutting anything. That step is the same whether you call a locksmith or walk into a dealership. I just do it faster because I am already standing at your car.

Q: My 1997 Sebring key turns but feels stiff and grinds in the ignition. Is the key worn or is it the cylinder?

Usually both, on a car this age. These ignition cylinders wear over decades of use, and a key that has been copied a few times can accumulate small cutting errors that chew the wafers faster than a factory original would. If the original key feels noticeably smoother than a copy you have been using daily, the copy is the likely culprit. If both feel rough, the cylinder wafers are probably worn.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN, or does my car need to be present?

VIN-based key code lookup is an option on vehicles this age, though I always verify at the lock when I am on site anyway. Having the car present is cleaner and faster. Either way, I am coming to you in Coronado Village, so the car being there is not a problem.

1997 Chrysler Sebring Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked near the Ferry Landing side of Coronado Village. She had a 1997 Sebring and her only key had snapped off at the bow, right where the blade meets the head. Not bent, not lost. Snapped clean.

She had already called a tow company. They quoted her a wait and a haul to a dealer in National City. I told her to cancel the tow.

I pulled up, decoded the lock cylinder directly, and cut a replacement key blade on site. No port to plug into, no software countdown, no waiting room. The key slid in, the ignition turned, and that was it. She had been standing next to a perfectly functional car for the better part of an hour.

The dealer route would have been her whole afternoon, plus the tow fee, plus whatever the service writer decided to call the job. She avoided all of it. One call, one key, done on the curb in Coronado Village.

Chrysler Sebring Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come directly to wherever you are in Coronado or Coronado Village. The 1997 Sebring uses a mechanical key, which means I can decode the lock or use the key code to cut a working key right at your car. No tow, no dealer, no waiting room. Bring a valid ID and your registration when I arrive and we get moving.
