Car Key Replacement: Common Questions

What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

A valid photo ID and your vehicle registration. The name on the ID needs to match the registration. If you're borrowing the car, have the owner provide written authorization or be available by phone for verbal confirmation. Ownership verification is required on every single job. It's quick, and it's there to make sure nobody gets a key made for a car that isn't theirs.

Can you come to a parking garage, tow yard, or my job site?

Yes, all of the above. Parking structures downtown, impound lots, hotel valets, military base housing (with base access), your office parking lot, even airport long-term lots. If we can get to the vehicle and access the driver's door, we can do the work. We handle tow yard jobs near Barrio Logan and Kearny Mesa all the time.

Will my roadside assistance or insurance pay for a new key?

Roadside assistance almost always covers lockouts (getting the door open) but not key replacement (cutting and programming a new one). Those are two different services. That said, some comprehensive auto insurance policies and credit card travel benefits do cover lost key replacement up to a certain dollar amount. We'll provide a detailed invoice with line items so you can file a claim if your policy qualifies.

I bought a key fob on Amazon. Can you just program it?

Depends on the key. Some aftermarket fobs work fine and we're happy to program them. Others use incorrect chip types or frequencies that won't pair with your vehicle no matter what we do. Before we schedule, send us the listing link or part number and we'll tell you straight up if it's going to work. If it won't, we carry OEM-spec replacements on the truck so you won't need a second appointment.

Can you make more than one key at a time?

Yes, and it's the smart move. The diagnostic session and setup time are the same whether we program one key or four. Each additional key in the same visit costs less than scheduling a separate trip later. Most vehicles support up to eight keys in the system. We recommend keeping at least two programmed and stored in different locations.

My key broke inside the lock. Can you still help?

That's a two-part job: extraction first, then cut and program a replacement. The biggest thing you can do to help is leave the broken piece alone. Don't push it further in, don't try to pry it out with pliers or a knife. Every time someone digs around in there before we arrive, it risks scoring the lock cylinder and turning a simple extraction into a lock replacement. Call us and don't touch it.

Do you handle fleet vehicles, rental cars, or motorcycles?

Fleet vehicles and motorcycles with transponder systems, yes. Rental cars get tricky because the rental company owns the vehicle, so they need to authorize the work directly. If you're managing a commercial fleet in San Diego, we do volume accounts with per-key pricing and priority scheduling. Motorcycles with chipped keys are becoming more common and we carry the diagnostic tools for most major brands.

How do I know your price is fair?

We text you a flat price before we leave the shop. That number covers everything: the key blank, cutting, programming, and the trip to your location. No add-ons once we arrive. We don't charge a separate "service call fee" or bump the price when we see the vehicle. You'll know the total before we ever start driving. Compare it to a dealership quote and the tow bill you'd need to get there.
