Ignition repair typically runs $175 to $325 depending on the issue. Full cylinder replacement ranges from $275 to $400. We diagnose on-site and give you an exact price before any work starts. No trip charges, no surprise parts markups.

01

Ignition Cylinder Repair

Key getting harder to turn every morning? Grinding or catching halfway through the rotation? That's cylinder wear, and it only gets worse from here.

Ignition cylinders fail in predictable ways: wafers wear down and stop springing back, the housing collects debris and starts binding, or the cam wears and won't release the steering lock cleanly. In many cases we replace the worn wafers, clean and re-lubricate the housing, and restore full function without pulling the steering column apart.

$200โ€“$30030โ€“45 min

Describe the symptoms: stiff, grinding, or intermittent. We'll advise before heading out.

02

Full Cylinder Replacement

Cylinder is cracked, force-turned, or completely seized? Repair won't hold. We replace the full unit and recode it to your existing key so you're not carrying two keys.

Full cylinder replacement means pulling the steering column trim, extracting the old cylinder with a release pin or by drilling the shear bolts, and pressing in a new housing. We recode the new cylinder to accept your existing key so you keep one key for everything.

$275โ€“$40045โ€“75 min

Let us inspect the cylinder first. If repair is still viable, we'll tell you and save you the difference.

03

Ignition Switch Replacement

Key turns smoothly but the car intermittently won't start, or the dashboard cuts out mid-drive? The cylinder is fine. The electrical switch behind it is failing.

The ignition switch sits behind the mechanical cylinder and converts the key's physical rotation into electrical signals that power the starter, accessories, and dashboard electronics. When the switch wears out, you get intermittent no-starts, the system stuck in accessory mode, or random electrical dropouts while driving.

$225โ€“$35030โ€“60 min

Tell us the year and make and we'll verify parts availability before we schedule.

04

Stuck Key Extraction & Repair

Key won't come out of the ignition? Do not force it. Every twist risks snapping the blade off inside the cylinder, which makes everything harder and more expensive.

A stuck key means a wafer inside the cylinder has collapsed and is physically trapping the blade at a depth that prevents the cam from returning to the park position. Sometimes the steering lock is engaged under load and needs to be released mechanically before the key will budge.

$175โ€“$27520โ€“40 min

Stop turning the key. Call us before the blade snaps.

05

Wafer Rebuild & Rekey

Want to change the key without replacing the whole cylinder? A wafer rebuild invalidates old keys and gives you a fresh cut.

A wafer rebuild replaces the spring-loaded wafers inside the existing cylinder and resets the lock to accept a new key. The cylinder housing stays in the vehicle. This is the right move when the housing is solid but you need to kill old keys: a former roommate or employee still has access, a lost spare is floating around somewhere, you bought the car used and want to start clean.

$225โ€“$32540โ€“60 min

Rekeying works best when the cylinder housing is undamaged. Tell us the situation and we'll advise.

06

Anti-Theft System Reset

Security light locked on, engine won't crank, and you've already tried a new battery and a new key? The immobilizer is the problem, and it needs a diagnostic reset.

Modern anti-theft systems, PATS, VATS, Passlock, Passlock II, and manufacturer-specific IMMO platforms, trigger false no-start conditions from low battery voltage, a failed transponder read, a software fault, or an aftermarket alarm conflicting with the factory system.

$200โ€“$32530โ€“50 min

Note the exact security light behavior: solid, flashing, or intermittent. It tells us which system layer to focus on.

Signs Your Ignition Needs Help

  • Your key has been grinding in the ignition for weeks and this morning it barely turned over at all.
  • The car was broken into, the thief forced the ignition cylinder, and now the key won't turn without resistance.
  • You replaced the battery over the weekend and the anti-theft system locked the engine out completely.
  • A key snapped off inside the ignition and half the blade is stuck in the cylinder with no way to grip it.
  • You bought a used car with a rough ignition and want the cylinder rekeyed so only your keys work going forward.

Ignition Repair: What to Know

How do I know if I need ignition repair or a full replacement?
We diagnose on-site before recommending either one. If the wafers are worn but the cylinder housing is intact and undamaged, a repair or wafer rebuild saves you money. If the housing is cracked, the cylinder was force-turned, or the wafers are collapsed beyond repair, replacement is the only option that holds long-term. We'll show you what we find.
Do I need to tow my car to get the ignition fixed?
No. We come to wherever the vehicle is parked: your driveway, a parking lot, the side of the road. All of our ignition work is done in-vehicle. We carry replacement cylinders, switches, and wafer kits on the truck. The only scenario that requires moving the vehicle is if the steering column itself has structural damage, which is rare and usually the result of a theft attempt.
Will my current key still work after ignition work?
For cylinder repair and switch replacement, yes. Your key stays the same. For full cylinder replacement, we recode the new cylinder to your existing key so nothing changes. Wafer rebuild and rekey is the only service that intentionally changes the key, and that's the purpose of the service. We always tell you ahead of time.
What causes an ignition cylinder to fail?
Mileage and repetition. Every time you insert and turn the key, the wafers inside the cylinder cycle against spring tension. Over thousands of cycles the wafers wear thin, the springs weaken, and the cylinder starts binding. Debris from key blanks and pocket lint accelerates the process. Heavy keychains that put lateral torque on the cylinder while driving also contribute. There's no maintenance schedule for ignition cylinders. They either work or they start failing.
Can a bad ignition cause a no-start even if the key and battery are fine?
Yes. If the cylinder isn't rotating the cam fully, the transponder antenna ring won't get a clean read on the key chip, which triggers the immobilizer. If the ignition switch behind the cylinder has failed, it won't send the start signal even though the cylinder turns normally. Both scenarios produce a no-start that looks like a key or battery issue but isn't.
Is it safe to keep driving with a stiff or grinding ignition?
It works until it doesn't, and there's no reliable way to predict when it stops working. A cylinder that grinds today could seize tomorrow or last another month. What we do know is that the wafer damage gets worse with every cycle, and the cost goes up the longer you wait. Catching it early means a $200 repair. Waiting until it seizes or snaps your key means a $350 replacement and possibly a tow.
Why does a wafer rebuild and rekey cost as much as it does?
Because it's precision work. We disassemble the cylinder, replace individual wafers with the correct depths for a new key code, reassemble, test, and cut a new key to match. It's the same labor as a repair plus the added step of coding a new key. The benefit is you keep your existing cylinder and eliminate all old keys from working, without the higher cost of a full housing replacement.
What's the difference between an ignition problem and a transponder problem?
An ignition problem is mechanical or electrical: the key won't turn, grinds, sticks, or the switch doesn't send the start signal. A transponder problem is a chip communication issue: the key turns fine mechanically, but the immobilizer doesn't recognize the chip and blocks the engine. They can look identical from the driver's seat. We diagnose which one it is on-site so we're fixing the right thing.
