Ignition Cylinder Repair
Key getting harder to turn every morning? Grinding or catching halfway through the rotation? That's cylinder wear, and it only gets worse from here.
Ignition cylinders fail in predictable ways: wafers wear down and stop springing back, the housing collects debris and starts binding, or the cam wears and won't release the steering lock cleanly. In many cases we replace the worn wafers, clean and re-lubricate the housing, and restore full function without pulling the steering column apart.
Describe the symptoms: stiff, grinding, or intermittent. We'll advise before heading out.
Full Cylinder Replacement
Cylinder is cracked, force-turned, or completely seized? Repair won't hold. We replace the full unit and recode it to your existing key so you're not carrying two keys.
Full cylinder replacement means pulling the steering column trim, extracting the old cylinder with a release pin or by drilling the shear bolts, and pressing in a new housing. We recode the new cylinder to accept your existing key so you keep one key for everything.
Let us inspect the cylinder first. If repair is still viable, we'll tell you and save you the difference.
Ignition Switch Replacement
Key turns smoothly but the car intermittently won't start, or the dashboard cuts out mid-drive? The cylinder is fine. The electrical switch behind it is failing.
The ignition switch sits behind the mechanical cylinder and converts the key's physical rotation into electrical signals that power the starter, accessories, and dashboard electronics. When the switch wears out, you get intermittent no-starts, the system stuck in accessory mode, or random electrical dropouts while driving.
Tell us the year and make and we'll verify parts availability before we schedule.
Stuck Key Extraction & Repair
Key won't come out of the ignition? Do not force it. Every twist risks snapping the blade off inside the cylinder, which makes everything harder and more expensive.
A stuck key means a wafer inside the cylinder has collapsed and is physically trapping the blade at a depth that prevents the cam from returning to the park position. Sometimes the steering lock is engaged under load and needs to be released mechanically before the key will budge.
Stop turning the key. Call us before the blade snaps.
Wafer Rebuild & Rekey
Want to change the key without replacing the whole cylinder? A wafer rebuild invalidates old keys and gives you a fresh cut.
A wafer rebuild replaces the spring-loaded wafers inside the existing cylinder and resets the lock to accept a new key. The cylinder housing stays in the vehicle. This is the right move when the housing is solid but you need to kill old keys: a former roommate or employee still has access, a lost spare is floating around somewhere, you bought the car used and want to start clean.
Rekeying works best when the cylinder housing is undamaged. Tell us the situation and we'll advise.
Anti-Theft System Reset
Security light locked on, engine won't crank, and you've already tried a new battery and a new key? The immobilizer is the problem, and it needs a diagnostic reset.
Modern anti-theft systems, PATS, VATS, Passlock, Passlock II, and manufacturer-specific IMMO platforms, trigger false no-start conditions from low battery voltage, a failed transponder read, a software fault, or an aftermarket alarm conflicting with the factory system.
Note the exact security light behavior: solid, flashing, or intermittent. It tells us which system layer to focus on.
