How the RDX Key System Has Changed
First Generation (TB)
Your first gen RDX uses a remote head key with an Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip inside the plastic head. You turn this key in the ignition the old fashioned way. Programming is done on-board, which means we handle it right in your driveway without any server connections or dealer involvement. The blade is a standard cut, and the fob runs on a CR1616 battery.
Second Generation (TB2/TC)
Acura stepped things up here with a full smart key and push-button start. Your fob carries an ID46 PCF7952 chip and a high-security blade tucked inside for emergencies. Programming requires OBD-II access, meaning we plug into your vehicle's diagnostic port and sync the new key electronically. The fob uses a CR2032 battery.
Third Generation (TF)
This is where security got serious. The third gen RDX uses a ID47 (PCF7953X) chip and requires server authentication for key programming. That means the vehicle talks to Honda's servers during the process. We carry the subscription access to make this happen on-site, so you still skip the dealer. High-security blade, CR2032 battery, push-button start.
Fourth Generation (KE)
Acura stepped things up again with advanced encryption and a laser-cut blade on the newest RDX. The ID47 (PCF7953X) chip requires server authentication, same as the third gen but with tighter security. We handle these with OEM fobs and server access. CR2032 battery, push-button start, and the most advanced immobilizer Acura has put in an RDX to date.
Which Key Does Your RDX Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start your RDX. The transponder chip inside communicates with your immobilizer every time you turn the key.
A fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, push the button, and go. There is a hidden emergency blade inside in case the battery dies.
Same pocket fob concept as the second gen, but with stronger encryption. Programming requires a live connection to Honda's servers, which we carry access to on every call.
The newest RDX fob with a precision laser-cut emergency blade. Advanced encryption means this one needs server authentication and OEM fobs for reliable results.
What to Expect Price-Wise
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95-$125.
Us vs. the Dealer
We test your system before we sell you anything. The dealer quotes a new key before they even look at the old one.
Common RDX Key Problems
Transponder Key Failure
The Megamos 13 (ID13) chip in your first-gen RDX key (2007-2012) wears with time, especially on high-mileage cars. Cranks but will not start, or starts intermittently. We read the chip on-site, reprogram or cut fresh. Common in Simi Valley.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Fob buttons stop responding, or push-button ignores you at random. On 2013-2025 RDX the CR2032 drains fast if the fob sits near electronics or inside the vehicle overnight. We swap and test signal. If continues, we check the antenna.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
People think the key is the problem when it is the ignition cylinder. On 2007-2018 RDX the cylinder wears with use, making the key hard to turn. A new key will not fix a worn lock. We check the cylinder first. Common in Oxnard at 100K+ miles.
Server Programming Lockout (All Keys Lost)
First check on a 2019-2025 RDX with no working keys: will the immobilizer accept a new key through server authentication? Newer models need a live Honda server connection; without it, no programming. We carry subscription access for on-site handling.
Can You Program an RDX Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself on a 2007 RDX if you have one working key. This only covers the remote functions, not the transponder chip. The chip still needs professional programming.
No DIY option here. The 2008-2012 RDX requires diagnostic equipment plugged into the vehicle for both remote and transponder programming.
The second gen smart key requires OBD-II diagnostic tools for programming. No self-programming procedure exists for these years.
Server authentication required. There is no way to program a third gen RDX key without professional tools and a live server connection.
Same story as the third gen but with even tighter encryption. Professional programming with server access is the only path.
