Registration to the vehicle requires a diagnostic tool. There's no button sequence on this system.

My Acura is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try before calling?

First, replace the CR2032 battery. Even a cell that tests okay on a multimeter can drop too low under the load the fob puts on it. Seat it fully and make sure neither contact is bent.

If the warning stays, try this: hold the fob body flat against the ENGINE START/STOP button, press the brake, and push the button. That triggers a direct transponder read and is the built-in backup for exactly this situation. A lot of owners don't know it exists.

If neither of those gets you running, the issue is past the battery and needs a scan tool to sort out. Could be a communication fault between the fob and the keyless access control unit, could be an antenna circuit, could be something that a scan will point to immediately. That's where I come in.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 RDX. Can it be programmed, or did I waste my money?

It can be programmed as long as it's the correct fob for this vehicle. Match the factory FCC ID printed on your existing fob to confirm compatibility before anything else. An aftermarket fob built to the same spec will generally program fine with the right diagnostic equipment.

What won't work is trying to self-program it. This system has no onboard add-a-key sequence. You need a tool that can communicate with the vehicle's security system over the diagnostic port to register the new fob. If the fob is correct and unregistered, a shop visit or a mobile call is the only path to getting it working.

How many keys can the 2013 RDX hold in memory, and does adding a new one erase the others?

The system holds multiple keys in memory and adding one does not automatically wipe the others. A standard add-a-key procedure registers the new fob alongside whatever is already stored.

The exception is an all-keys-lost situation, where every registered fob is gone or dead. That requires a full system reset, which does erase all stored keys before new ones are enrolled. It also has a timed security delay built into the process, so the job takes longer than a simple add.

One thing worth doing any time a key gets lost: have the old fob erased from memory so it can't be used to start the vehicle. That's something most owners skip and probably shouldn't.
