How the Acura TL Key Changed Over 20 Years
1st Gen: Simple Metal Key
No programming needed here. Your 1st gen TL uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer. We cut it on the spot and you drive away. It is the simplest Acura key job there is.
2nd Gen: Transponder Arrives
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your 2nd gen TL uses an Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip that talks to Honda's immobilizer system. The key still goes in the ignition the old fashioned way, but now the car has to recognize the chip before it lets you start. We pull the PIN code and program it through the dash.
3rd Gen: Remote Head Key
Acura stepped things up here with a remote head key, combining your buttons and transponder into one unit. It uses an Megamos 13 (ID13) chip, a high security laser cut blade, and a CR1616 battery. OBD-II programming with a PIN code is required, and the blade needs a precision laser cutter to get the track right.
4th Gen: Smart Proximity Key
This is where security got serious. Your 4th gen TL runs an ID46 PCF7952 chip with push button start and proximity sensing. Programming requires server authentication, which means our tools connect to Honda's servers to authorize the new key. It takes a bit longer, but we handle it all from your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Acura TL Use?
A basic metal key with no chip inside. No remote, no buttons. We cut it on the spot in about five minutes.
Looks like a regular key but has an Megamos 13 (ID13) chip hidden in the head. Your car will not start without it being programmed to the immobilizer.
Your lock, unlock, and trunk buttons are built right into the key head. The blade is laser cut, so it has a groove running down the side instead of traditional teeth.
This is the fob that stays in your pocket. Push button start, proximity unlock. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for when the battery dies.

Common Acura TL Key Problems
Transponder Sync Failure
People think a new battery fixes a no-start on a 1999-2014 TL. Usually it does not. The immobilizer lost sync with your key after a dead battery or failed jump start. We reprogram the transponder through OBD and the TL starts right up.
High Security Blade Breakage
First check on a 2004-or-newer TL: the blade. Those laser cut keys have a thinner profile and are notorious for snapping at the base where metal meets plastic. If yours is cracked, replace before it breaks off in the ignition. We cut on-site.
Smart Key Battery Drain
The proximity fob on your 2009-2014 TL can develop a parasitic drain that kills the CR2032 fast. Often after a programming attempt that did not complete, or if the fob sat near electronics. We test signal output, replace battery, verify programming.
EEPROM Corruption
Your 1999-2008 TL's immobilizer stores key data on an EEPROM chip. If someone programmed a key while the battery was low, or a cheap scan tool sent bad data, that chip can corrupt. We read and repair the EEPROM on-site, no new module needed.
Can You Program an Acura TL Key Yourself?
Your 1st gen TL has no transponder chip, so there is nothing to program for starting the car. You can pair a remote using the door unlock switch method. Hold the unlock button, cycle the ignition, and press lock then unlock on the new remote.
You can program the remote buttons yourself using the ignition cycle method with one existing key. Cycle the ignition to ON, press lock, turn OFF, repeat four times until you hear a chime. But the transponder chip that lets the car start requires professional tools and a PIN code.
Same ignition cycle method works here for remote functions. You need one working key and about two minutes. The transponder and immobilizer programming still needs OBD-II access with a professional tool, so that part is on us.
You can pair remote buttons yourself if you have a working key. The proximity and push-to-start functions require server authentication through Honda's system. There is no DIY workaround for the smart key programming.

Did You Know?
Back in the mid-1990s, Acura made an unusual branding decision with the TL. It was one of the first models to adopt Honda's new alphanumeric naming strategy, replacing the traditional Vigor nameplate with just two letters. The goal was to create a cleaner, more premium identity for the Acura lineup, moving away from names that sounded like they belonged on a sedan and toward something that felt more like a luxury marque.
