1995 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Acura to the dealer for a replacement key?

Not for a 1995 TL. The dealer route on a mechanical key car often means towing the vehicle in, waiting for the parts counter, and paying for labor time that adds up fast. On top of that, arranging a tow when you're locked out in Isla Vista and the car is in a tight parking spot is its own headache. I come to the vehicle.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, which is your registration, title, or insurance card showing the vehicle. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker before any work starts. Same standard a dealer would use, done on site in minutes rather than at a parts counter.

Q: Can I get a key cut if I've completely lost all copies and have nothing to hand the locksmith?

Yes. On a 1995 TL, a key can be made two ways when you have nothing to start with. First option is pulling the key code from records using the VIN, which gives me the cut spec directly. Second option is decoding one of the lock cylinders on the car itself, usually the door lock. Either path gets to the same place: a key cut to your specific vehicle, tested on site.

Q: My key turns but feels sloppy in the ignition. Should I just get a new key cut?

Maybe, but the key is only half the picture. On a car this age, a worn key and a worn ignition cylinder tend to go together. A fresh key cut to the correct depth might tighten things up noticeably. But if the cylinder itself is worn, a new key helps less than you'd hope. Worth getting the key done first since it's the cheaper step. If the slop stays after that, the cylinder is the next conversation.

1995 Acura TL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy renting a room near the university in Isla Vista. He'd been in Goleta for a week, was using a borrowed car from a family member, and had one key for a 1995 Acura TL. That one key was somewhere inside the car.

He'd already tried a wire hanger. Didn't work, and he'd managed to scratch the door trim a little in the process. He wasn't sure if he needed a locksmith or a tow, and someone told him to call the dealer first. The dealer said bring it in. He pointed out that he couldn't bring it in because he was locked out of it. There was a pause, and then they quoted him a wait time and a service fee that made him look up other options.

I came out that evening. Getting into the car was the quick part. Then I decoded the door lock cylinder and cut a replacement key on my machine right there in the parking spot. He had a working key in his hand about twenty minutes after I arrived.

He mentioned the dealer quote almost as an aside. Said he was just glad to skip the tow.

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. That's the whole point of a mobile service. Wherever your 1995 Acura TL is sitting in Goleta or Isla Vista, I come to the car. I carry the tools and blanks to decode the lock and cut a key on site. You don't need a working key in hand, and you don't need to tow anything anywhere. Call, tell me the location, and I'll get there.
