2012 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2012 Acura TL Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from Casa Conejo on a Saturday evening. A guy visiting Thousand Oaks for a wedding had zero keys for his 2012 Acura TL. His only fob had gone missing somewhere between the hotel and the ceremony venue, and the hotel concierge had already told him smart key replacement was dealer-only work. The nearest Acura dealer was closed until Monday, which meant he'd miss his flight home.

He met me in the hotel parking lot still in his dress shirt. The car just sat there, completely dark. No fob, no start, no way in without the mechanical backup blade.

All-keys-lost on a push-button TL is a different level of job compared to a basic transponder car. There's no ignition cylinder to turn through a relearn sequence. The immobilizer control unit needs to be accessed through the OBD port, the old fob data cleared, and the replacement fob registered fresh. I backed up the immobilizer data before touching anything, then ran the all-keys-lost sequence. The replacement four-button fob, which matches the factory fob on this car, paired without a fight.

He did the thing people always do: pressed the start button before I even finished testing the door handles. It fired right up.

I walked every button, both door handles, and confirmed the mechanical insert key worked the door cylinder before I closed out. He was back on a timeline that got him to his flight. The dealer would have had him waiting until Monday, then probably another day for parts. It wasn't dealer-only. It was tool-dependent, and I had the tools in the van.
