2006 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the key programming actually take on-site?

For the 2006 TL, adding a key to an existing working key takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes on-site. The transponder registration process on this generation is well-documented and the tooling handles it cleanly. All-keys-lost is a longer job. Without a working key present, the immobilizer reset adds time before any new key can be registered. Figure closer to 30 to 45 minutes for that scenario. Either way, it all happens at your car. No waiting room, no queue.

Q: Can you turn this around faster than the dealer?

The programming step itself takes the same amount of time regardless of who does it. What's different is everything around it. No appointment wait, no repair order process, no standing in line at the parts counter, no waiting for a tech to free up between other jobs. Dealers book key programming as a flat labor time, but the actual visit drags out well past that. I show up, do the work, and leave.

Q: I bought a replacement key online for my 2006 TL. Can I program it myself?

This comes up a lot. The short answer: not on this vehicle. The 2006 TL does not have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence for the transponder. Some older Honda and Acura models had an ignition-turn relearn procedure, but this generation requires diagnostic equipment to register a new transponder to the immobilizer. The key blade still needs to be cut to your specific car as well.

Q: My 2006 TL starts fine but the key feels like it's going to break -- should I deal with this now or wait?

Deal with it now. The 2006 TL uses a single-piece transponder key where the chip is housed in the plastic head. If that head cracks or the blade snaps while it's in the ignition cylinder, you've turned a minor job into an extraction plus a full key replacement -- and you're not driving anywhere until it's done. Getting a spare made while the original is still intact is the easier path.

2006 Acura TL Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the College area of Ventura. He had one key, it broke off in his hand -- the plastic head separated from the blade while he was pulling it out of the ignition. The blade was still inside the cylinder. He had the broken head in his palm and was standing next to a car he couldn't open and couldn't start.

He found me, texted me the address, and I drove out to him. The van had everything I needed for his TL already loaded.

First thing was extracting the broken blade from the cylinder without damaging the lock. That part requires patience more than anything else. Once I had the cylinder clear, I cut a new key to match his vehicle, registered the transponder to his car, and handed it back to him.

He turned the key, the engine started, and that was the whole job. Done in the parking spot where he'd been standing for the better part of an hour. He mentioned the dealer wanted him to tow the car in and come back the next day. He saved the tow, saved the overnight wait, and paid a fraction of what that dealer visit would have cost him.

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a replacement key for my 2006 TL after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments keep business hours. If you lose your only key on a Saturday evening or Sunday, you're looking at an overnight minimum before they can even write up the work order, and then you still need to get the car there. I work outside those hours. The 2006 TL is a transponder key vehicle, which means the job involves both cutting the blade and programming the chip to your car's immobilizer.
