2003 Acura TL REMOTE-HEAD-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy near the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura. His 2003 TL would crank but not fire up, and he was convinced it was the fuel pump. He had already been on AcuraZine reading threads about no-start conditions and talked himself into the worst-case scenario.
I asked him one question: is the green key light on the dash blinking or staying solid? He checked. Blinking. That is the immobilizer telling you it does not recognize the transponder chip. Fuel pump is fine. Key is the problem.
His original key had a cracked bow and a worn blade, and I could see the transponder glass capsule was loose inside the head. The ID13 chip was physically damaged. No amount of wiggling was going to bring that back.
I decoded the door lock, cut a fresh HD106-PT blank to match, then connected my programmer through the OBD-II port under the dash. The IMMO2 system on these has a timed security countdown during registration, so there is a few minutes of standing around while the module talks to the new chip. Once it accepted the key, I tested. Three clean start cycles, key out, key in, engine on, engine off. Checked that the green key light went solid each time instead of blinking.
He sat in the driver's seat and turned it over himself. Just stared at the tach needle for a second, like he needed to see it hold steady. No fuel pump. No tow to the dealer. Just a bad chip in an old key.
