2003 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my 2003 Acura TL so it can't be used to start the car?

Yes. When new keys are registered to the immobilizer on these, all previously stored keys are cleared out of memory. Only the keys present during the programming session get registered. The old key, even if someone still has it, won't start the car afterward. One thing that doesn't change: a cut blade without a registered chip can still open the door mechanically if someone has it.

Q: My 2003 TL has a transponder key but it just looks like a regular key with a plastic head. Is there actually a chip in there?

There is. The plastic head on the 2003 TL key houses a transponder chip. It has no battery, no buttons, no remote function. The chip is passive, meaning it draws power from the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder when you insert the key, and it transmits a code back. If that code doesn't match what the immobilizer expects, the engine will crank but won't stay running, or won't start at all. This is exactly why a hardware-store copy fails.

Q: My 2003 TL starts fine sometimes and cuts out other times. Could this be a transponder issue?

It can be. On these, an intermittent transponder fault often shows up as the car starting normally, then on a later attempt cranking but not catching, or starting and dying within a second or two. Owners on forums describe it as "runs great, then suddenly acts like it's out of gas at startup. A few things cause this. The antenna ring around the ignition cylinder can develop a loose connection or internal fault, meaning it reads the chip inconsistently.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home for a 2003 Acura TL?

Not on this vehicle. The 2003 TL doesn't have a DIY add-a-key sequence. Transponder registration requires a tool connected to the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn procedure or button combination that works on this system. If you bought a cut key online hoping to self-program it, you still need someone with the right equipment to register the chip. The blade alone won't do it.

2003 Acura TL Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the sports fields off Petit Avenue in the Thille neighborhood. He had a 2003 Acura TL and a key that had snapped at the base of the head, right where the plastic meets the blade. The blade was stuck in the door lock. The head, with the transponder inside, was sitting in his palm.

He thought he needed a whole new ignition. That's usually the first place people go when something breaks that dramatically.

I got the broken blade out of the door lock without damaging the cylinder, which is the part that matters most when a key snaps like that. Then I decoded the cut from the lock, cut a new blade, transferred the transponder registration through the OBD port, and confirmed the new key would hold. Three cold starts, spaced out, not back to back, because intermittent transponder faults tend to show up on the second or third attempt, not the first.

The whole thing took about forty minutes on site. He didn't need a tow, didn't need to leave the car overnight, and didn't need to explain to a dealer service writer why the key broke the way it did.

He mentioned on the way out that the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause before he even described the full problem. He said, "I hadn't even told them what year it was yet."

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2003 Acura TL?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call for a tow. Dealer all-keys-lost jobs on these require an appointment, and some dealers won't touch a vehicle this age at all, or they'll refer you to a locksmith anyway after you've already paid for the tow. For a 2003 TL, the job involves decoding or measuring the lock to cut a working blade, then connecting to the OBD port to register the new transponder key to the immobilizer.
