Up in Serra Cross, just off the hill near Grant Park, I got a call from a guy whose 2000 TL had been sitting for two days. He had a key. It turned in the ignition. The engine just wouldn't fire and stay running.
He'd already been to a shop. They told him it might be a fuel issue and quoted him a diagnostic. Something about it felt off to him, so he looked it up himself and landed on the immobilizer as a possible culprit. Then he called me.

When I got there I confirmed the issue was with the transponder. His key had been copied at some point, probably a hardware store, and the copy had no chip in it. The original was long gone. What he'd been using for who knows how long was a key that physically turned the cylinder but couldn't talk to the immobilizer at all.
I cut a proper replacement, programmed the transponder chip to the car on-site, and tested it through three full start cycles before I called it done. He stood there watching the TL idle and just said, "That's it."
The dealer had been the next call on his list. He was glad he hadn't made it yet.
