When I got to him, the key had a hairline crack in the plastic head, right where the transponder sits. The chip was still intact, but the housing had flexed enough over the years that contact was unreliable. Classic wear point on these older transponder keys. I cut a new key blade to the vehicle and programmed a fresh transponder on site.
He tested it a few times in the lot. Started every time. He shook his head and said he'd been nursing that key for three months thinking it was something bigger.
It wasn't. It was just a worn-out key that needed replacing. Job done in the parking lot, saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and he was back to the dock before the afternoon wind picked up.
