My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard job and we do it mobile. The tools go in, the broken piece comes out, and the cylinder stays intact. Once it's clear, we cut a new replacement key to your vehicle right there on site and program the transponder.

On the 2001 TL, the key head is a solid plastic block with the chip embedded inside. The blade is the part that usually fails, either snapping at the shoulder or cracking where it meets the head. If the head is still usable and the chip reads clean, we can sometimes recut to a new blade and save the chip. If both are damaged, it's a full new key. Either way, you're not towing it anywhere.

What is a transponder key and why does my 2001 Acura TL need one?

The 2001 TL uses a transponder key, which means there's a small electronic chip embedded in the plastic head of the key. When you turn the ignition, the vehicle reads that chip. If it sees the right signal, the engine starts. If it doesn't -- wrong chip, unprogrammed chip, or no chip at all -- the engine won't run even if the blade is cut perfectly.

This is different from a remote or fob. The 2001 TL transponder key has no buttons, no remote lock or unlock, no battery. It's just a key blade with a chip in the head. Cutting the blade to fit the ignition is half the job. Programming the chip is the other half. You need both done right or the car won't start.

Question 3

My Acura won't start and the security light is on. Is it the key?

Could be. On the 2001 TL, when the immobilizer doesn't recognize the transponder, the security indicator will typically stay lit and the engine won't crank past the starter, or it cranks but won't fire. First thing to check is whether the key head has any cracks or damage, since a fractured housing can disrupt the chip even if the blade looks fine.

Also worth trying: a different ignition attempt with the key fully seated and held still. These older systems can be sensitive to key movement during the read cycle. If you only have one key and it's been on a heavy keyring for years, the head wear alone can cause intermittent no-starts.

I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just program it?

Sometimes, but it depends on what you bought. For the 2001 TL, the blank needs to have the correct transponder chip type inside to be compatible. A lot of the cheap blanks sold online either have the wrong chip or no chip at all -- just a shell. If it's the wrong type, it won't program no matter what tool we use.

If you bought from a reputable key supplier and the chip type is correct, bring it and we'll cut and program it. If there's any doubt about what's inside, we carry the right blanks on the van and can swap it out on site. Saves you the headache of finding out at the car that the online blank was useless.

Question 5

Can I make a spare key for my 2001 TL or does it have to be done at the dealer?

You do not need the dealer for this. A mobile locksmith with the right programming equipment can cut and program a spare key on site. The 2001 TL is old enough that the process is well within reach for any competent automotive locksmith -- no factory credentials, no tow, no appointment weeks out.

Getting a spare made while you still have a working key is the smart move. All-keys-lost jobs on these take more time and more steps. Having one good key in hand makes the whole job faster and less expensive.
