A woman in the Wildwood neighborhood of Thousand Oaks called me on a Tuesday morning. She had already been through it once. A locksmith she found through a paid ad had come out, charged her a number that was nothing close to what they quoted on the phone, and left her with a key that would start the car and do nothing else. All four buttons on the fob were dead. The car ran, but she had been manually locking and unlocking every door for two weeks.

She thanked me, and then, almost as an afterthought, mentioned what the dealer had quoted her if she had gone that route instead. It was a number that made the whole situation make even less sense. She had paid more than that to the first guy and gotten less than half the result.
