2005 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to Casitas Springs?

I give you an honest arrival window when you call, based on where I am and what's on the schedule. Because I'm already mobile and working the Ventura area, I can usually get to you well before a tow truck could be arranged and your TL hauled across town. Acura dealers often have multi-hour service windows, and if they need to order the key blank, it could be days before the car moves.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Most of the time, yes. I carry blanks and programming equipment for this generation of Acura in the van, so if you call and I'm in the area, same-day service is realistic. The 2005 TL key is not an exotic blank that needs to be ordered. Cut it, program it, test it, done. Dealers can take days if they're waiting on parts or have a packed schedule. I'm already on the road.

Q: I have a spare key for my 2005 TL but it won't start the car. The key turns fine but the engine won't fire. What's going on?

That's almost always a transponder issue, not a mechanical one. If the key blade turns the ignition but the engine won't start, or cranks briefly and dies, the immobilizer isn't recognizing the chip in that key. This happens with spare keys that were never properly programmed, keys that got cloned improperly, or occasionally keys that were damaged. The blade fitting the cylinder just means the cut is right. It says nothing about whether the chip is enrolled.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home, or do I need a tool to do it?

You need a tool. The 2005 TL does not have a driver-accessible onboard relearn sequence the way some older domestic vehicles do. Adding a transponder key to this system requires programming equipment connected to the vehicle. There's no ignition-turn trick that works here.

2005 Acura TL Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Casitas Springs, I got a call from a woman whose 2005 TL was parked in the underground garage of her building. Tow truck couldn't get in. Ceiling was too low, turns were too tight, and the dealer told her she needed to get the car to them somehow. She had no working key, so that was a dead end before it started.

I parked on the street and walked down with my bag.

The TL takes a transponder turn-key, which meant two tasks: cut the blade to match her locks and program the chip so the immobilizer would accept it. I decoded the existing lock cylinder to get the cut right, then used my programmer to enroll the new key into the vehicle. No tow, no dealer appointment, no catch-22.

She turned the key, the engine started, and she drove out of that garage on her own. The dealer option would have required solving the transportation problem before they'd even look at the car. I just walked in and solved it where it sat.

How long does a 2005 Acura TL key replacement take?▼

Usually 30 to 45 minutes on site. The 2005 TL is a transponder turn-key, so there are two parts to the job: cutting the blade to fit the ignition and door locks, and programming the transponder chip so the immobilizer recognizes it. Neither step is especially slow on this generation, but both have to be done and tested before I hand it over.
