2009 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my TL to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. I come to wherever the car is sitting. The 2009 TL's smart key system is handled through the OBD port, so the vehicle does not need to be running or driven anywhere. Dealers default to telling you to tow because that is the only way their service lane operates. A mobile setup cuts that whole process out. The car stays put, I do the work on site, and you drive away with a working key the same day.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2009 TL?

On site, figure 45 minutes to an hour. The immobilizer reset has a cycle to it, it does not happen instantly, and once it clears I register the new fob and cut the insert blade. At a dealer, that same work can stretch into a full day or longer because of scheduling, parts availability, and the fact that a lot of dealers do not stock this fob on the shelf.

Q: My 2009 TL fob unlocks the car but the engine won't start. What's going on?

This one comes up on TL forums fairly often. If the fob handles door lock and unlock fine but the car refuses to start, the remote entry receiver and the immobilizer are being read by two different antennas. A fob that's healthy enough to reach the door locks may still be too weak to be read by the start antenna inside the cabin.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

No. The 2009 TL smart key system does not have a self-programming sequence. A fob bought online still needs to be registered to the car through diagnostic equipment. If you buy one, hold onto it, I can program it when I arrive. Just make sure the factory FCC ID on the fob matches what came with your vehicle before you buy.

2009 Acura TL Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Faria Beach, I got a call from a nurse finishing a late shift. She needed a spare made for her 2009 TL and, before she'd hand me anything, she wanted to see credentials. She told me straight up she'd looked up locksmith scams before calling and wasn't taking chances. I appreciated that.

She asked about my BSIS license, LCO#6792, which is public record on the BSIS website if you want to check it right now. She pulled it up on her phone while I was setting up. That's exactly the right move. A licensed locksmith is traceable. An unlicensed one is not.

The TL's smart key system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. It's not a turn-the-key-six-times situation. I worked through the OBD port, registered the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer, and verified every button and the door handle touch sensors before calling it done. The insert blade got cut to match the vehicle at the same time.

The dealer quote she'd gotten over the phone was steep. What she paid me was a fraction of that. She got a receipt with a real license number, a real phone number, and my name on the van. She said that alone made the call worth it.

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys for my 2009 Acura TL. Can you still make a new one on site?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on the 2009 TL is a job I handle on site. The process involves resetting the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, which clears all previously registered fobs, then cutting a new insert blade and programming the replacement fob fresh. The old lost fobs can no longer start the car after the reset. Plan on about 45 minutes from the time I arrive.
