A grad student near Ventura Pier called me about her 2002 TL. Another locksmith had cut her a key about a week earlier, and it was dying on her. Mornings it would start fine. By evening the immobilizer light on the dash would stay solid green, engine would crank all day long but never fire. She thought the car had some deeper electrical gremlin.
It didn't.
I pulled the key apart on her apartment stairwell. The previous guy had used a T5 cloneable chip set to emulate ID13, which is close but not right for this generation of the Honda immobilizer. A T5 clone can handshake during initial programming and even pass a few start cycles, but the immobilizer ECU on the 2002 TL runs a secondary fixed-code verification that catches the mismatch after repeated use. It's a known issue in the locksmith world. Guys grab a T5 because it's cheap and universal, and it bites them a week later.
I programmed a new key with a genuine Megamos ID13 glass transponder on my VVDI2, read the immobilizer data through the OBD port, and registered the chip properly. Cut the blade to BHD106-PT spec from her door lock.
Tested it cold, tested it after a drive cycle, tested it the next morning over text. Solid every time.
The difference between a key that works and one that works for a week is the chip generation inside it. Her old locksmith saved a few bucks on the transponder and it cost her the whole job twice.
