Got a call from an older gentleman near Hollister Village Plaza in Goleta. He had a 1998 Acura TL he mostly kept parked, but he needed it running for medical appointments that week. His only key was worn down and getting harder to turn, and the car had been sitting long enough that the battery was borderline.
His daughter usually handled stuff like this but she was out of town. Getting the car to a dealer across town was not happening. He had a cane and no ride.
I drove out that morning. The TL uses the HON66 keyway, which is the standard Honda/Acura uncut profile for that era. I used my HON66 Lishi tool to decode the wafers through the driver door lock and verify the bitting. Cut a fresh blade on site. The transponder side is the Megamos ID13 chip, and I cloned it to the new key so the immobilizer would recognize it on first turn.
While I was there I checked the ignition cylinder. The wafers were dry and sticky, which explained the hard turning. A little lubrication and the new key slid in smooth.
He stood next to the car and watched the whole thing. When it started on the first try, he just nodded and said his daughter was going to be relieved.
