1998 Acura TL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does it take to cut a replacement key for a 1998 Acura TL?

Fast. This is a mechanical key job: decode the lock or reference the key code, cut the blade, verify the fit. On site, that's typically 15 minutes or less from the time I open my kit. No programming, no waiting on a tool to connect, no relearn sequence to sit through. All-keys-lost is the same process since there's no stored key memory to reset.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a car this old?

Yes, by a wide margin, and the reason is logistics, not skill. A dealer will write a repair order, route it to a service writer, wait for a tech to free up, and possibly order a blank if they don't stock one for a late-90s vehicle. The actual cutting takes minutes, but the internal process around it does not. With us, there's no queue.

Q: My 1998 TL ignition is stiff and the key sometimes won't turn. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Both can cause that symptom, and they're worth separating before you spend money on the wrong fix. A worn key blade will have visibly rounded cuts. If you hold it next to a freshly cut copy, the difference is obvious. A worn blade can slip in the cylinder but not engage the tumblers cleanly, which is why it feels stiff or catches mid-turn. A worn cylinder is a different problem.

Q: I haven't driven my 1998 TL in months and now it won't start. Is something wrong with the key?

Almost certainly not. On a 1998 TL, the key is entirely mechanical. A long sit is hard on the battery, the fuel system, and sometimes the starter, but the key itself doesn't "expire" or lose any stored data. If the engine cranks but won't fire, that's a fuel or ignition issue unrelated to the key. If nothing happens at all when you turn the key, check the battery first.

1998 Acura TL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A man in the Storke Ranch area called about his 1998 Acura TL. He used a cane, didn't drive much anymore, and the car was essentially his ride to medical appointments and nowhere else.

His only key was getting hard to turn, and he wasn't sure if the key was worn down or if something else was going on. Getting across town to a dealer wasn't a real option for him that week. His daughter was traveling, and he wasn't going to figure out a rideshare to a service department just to get a key made.

I drove to his building that morning. Took a look at the key he had: the blade was visibly worn at the tip and the cuts had rounded off from years of use. Decoded the lock, confirmed the bitting, cut a fresh blade on site. Slid it in and it turned like the car was new.

He asked if I could make him a second one while I was there. Of course. Two minutes later he had a spare sitting in his wallet for the first time in probably a decade.

He didn't have to leave, call anyone, or wait for a Monday appointment. The dealer comparison came up briefly and he just shook his head. He'd already called them and been told to bring it in, which for him wasn't simple. For a 1998 TL key, the job is entirely mechanical and I can do it at your car.

Acura TL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key made after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments typically close by early evening and most are closed Sundays. For a 1998 TL, that matters less than it would for a newer car because this key is purely mechanical. There's no programming window, no software, no system that needs a factory-authorized tool. A mobile locksmith with the right cutting equipment can handle it any day, any time. You're not waiting for a certified tech to free up or for parts to be ordered.
