I got a call from a guy near Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. He had his 2010 RDX, one working key, and a remote that barely functioned past arm's length. He had to walk up and press the fob against the door handle to get a response. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it did not. He figured he needed a whole new key.
When I pulled up he handed me the fob and the CR1616 was nearly dead. But when I opened the case I found the real problem: someone had pried it open at some point, probably to swap that battery, and the internal board was sitting slightly off its seating. The clips had a little bend to them. Not broken, just moved enough to cause intermittent contact.
I reseated the board, straightened the clips, dropped in a fresh CR1616, and snapped the case back together correctly. Then I walked the parking area doing range tests. Lock, unlock, and the third button, all the way out to where he said it used to work fine. It was back.
He asked if I needed to reprogram anything. I told him the key was already registered. No programming was needed because the key itself had not changed, just the battery and the board position. Since his transponder read was good and the green key light was not blinking, we were done.
He thought he was looking at a dealer appointment and a day without his truck. Turned out to be a hood-of-the-car fix in Channel Islands Harbor. That is most of these calls.
