I got the call just after sunrise in the Historic District. A 2025 Acura RDX, push-button start, dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning. He was parked near the old buildings, trying to get out ahead of morning traffic.
One fob. Five buttons. He had already done the battery swap with a CR2032 from a convenience store the night before. Tried it again that morning. Still nothing.
I pulled up in my van, and we walked through it on the hood. He watched the whole thing. The battery was a genuine CR2032, but when I popped the fob open, it was sitting just a hair off the contact pad. Not enough to see from the outside. Enough to kill proximity.
I reseated it properly, cleaned both contact points, and closed it back up. Then I pulled out my diagnostic scanner and checked the OBD port for any stored keyless access faults. Nothing. The system was clean, no antenna codes, no registration errors.
Held the fob at the door handle. Car woke right up.
He stood there for a second like he was waiting for it to change its mind. Then he laughed and said he had already been mentally preparing for a tow to the dealer and however many days without his car.
He drove out of the Historic District before the morning crowd even started rolling in. Total time on site was about twenty minutes.
