Got a call from a woman near the townhomes in Centennial Plaza, Oxnard. Her 2007 RDX would crank, fire for maybe two seconds, then die. The green key icon on the dash was blinking every time.
She told me another locksmith had made her a spare about a year ago. It worked for a while, then started acting up. Some mornings fine, some mornings the engine would catch and stall right out. She had already swapped the CR1616 twice thinking it was the battery.
I opened the N5F0602A1A fob on her hood. The CR1616 was fresh, so that side was fine. But the transponder chip was not seated right on the circuit board. It had shifted just enough to make contact intermittent. The previous tech had used the right ID46 chip but didn't secure it properly, and over time it moved. The Type 6 immobilizer in these RDXs reads the PCF7936 through a ring antenna around the ignition cylinder. If the chip signal is weak or inconsistent, the ECU/PCM kills fuel after initial crank. That is exactly what the blinking green key means: recognized the mechanical key, rejected the transponder.
I secured the chip, connected HDS to the DLC port, confirmed the immobilizer data matched, and re-registered the key. Then I cut and programmed a second spare so she would not be back in this spot.
She sat in the driver seat and started it six times in a row, waiting a few seconds between each one, watching the dash. On the seventh start she finally stopped holding her breath.
