I got a call out to the Historic District in Oxnard for a 2015 Acura RDX. Owner said the push-button start had gotten unreliable over the past week, and that morning it refused to start completely. The dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting right in the cupholder.
She mentioned another locksmith had made her a replacement key about a week before. That detail stuck with me.
When I pulled up and scanned the system, the remote functions looked fine at first glance. Lock, unlock, the fob was talking to the car. But the transponder side of the handshake was failing intermittently, and after a few attempts the vehicle security system shut the engine out entirely. What happened was the previous key had been cut correctly but registered sloppily. The fob body was also the wrong spec for this exact year, which meant the transponder inside wasn't fully compatible with the keyless access control unit on her RDX.
The system on this generation ties the fob registration directly to the engine control side. They have to match clean, every time, or you get exactly what she was experiencing: works once, fails twice, then stops working.
I built a correct replacement, registered it properly through the diagnostic port, walked every door handle sensor, tested the start button, and verified the emergency insert blade was seated right. Put a fresh CR2032 in while I had the fob open.
She'd already gotten a quote from the dealer. That quote required a tow, a wait for a service slot, and a bill that made her wince when she told me about it. We handled it in her parking spot. She was back to her day before the dealer would have even confirmed her appointment.
