Got a call from Mandalay State Beach in Oxnard. 2015 Acura RDX, push button start, four-button smart key, FCC ID KR5434760.
She said it worked fine in the morning, dead by evening. The dash kept cycling between "Keyless Access System Problem" and "Key not detected." Another locksmith had made her a replacement about a week before.
When I scanned the system through the OBD port, the immobilizer told the real story. The 2015 RDX uses an ID 47 chip inside that smart key running Honda's FSKI protocol. Remote functions can look perfectly healthy even when the transponder data is wrong. That is exactly what happened. Lock and unlock worked. The proximity antennas would pick up the fob once in a while. But after a few drive cycles, the immobilizer handshake failed and the car stopped starting consistently.
Her RDX is second generation (TB3, 2013 to 2018), and every trim runs the Smart Entry system. The keyless access control unit talks to the PCM, and there is no owner-level add-key procedure. Registration goes through the diagnostic port, and the system wipes all previously stored fobs during the process.
I built her a correct key matched to her vehicle, registered it, and replaced the weak CR2032 while I had it open. Then I walked every door handle sensor and verified the hatch button.
She had called the dealer first. By the time we finished in her parking spot, she was back inside studying instead of sitting in a service lounge somewhere.
