My 2011 RDX flip key blade broke inside the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. If the blade snaps at the pivot point or breaks off inside the ignition cylinder, I extract it with dedicated tools without damaging the wafers inside the lock. This happens more on flip keys than on fixed-blade keys because the pivot hinge is a stress point, especially on housings that have developed any wobble over the years.

If the transponder chip in the housing is still intact, I can cut a new blade and transfer or reuse what is salvageable. If the whole key is destroyed, I cut and program a complete replacement on site. Either way, you are not towing the car anywhere.

What exactly is the remote flip key on the 2011 RDX?

It is one housing that does two jobs. The blade folds into the remote body and locks open when you flip it out for the ignition. The remote side handles lock, unlock, and panic. The transponder chip inside handles immobilizer communication with the car.

The factory fob carries an FCC ID printed on the back label if you want to verify what you have. The CR1616 powers the remote functions only. If you are shopping for an aftermarket replacement, you want a shell that matches the factory FCC ID so the remote can be properly programmed. The transponder side gets registered separately through the OBD port regardless of where the housing comes from.

One thing to watch: Acura offered memory-linked key variants for this generation RDX, tied to driver seat and mirror memory positions. The dealer part numbers differ between the memory and non-memory versions. It does not change how the key is cut or how the transponder is programmed, but if you are sourcing a replacement shell, knowing which variant you have keeps you from ordering the wrong one.

The green key light is blinking and the RDX will not start. What does that mean?

That is the immobilizer telling you it did not read the chip in the key.

Try your spare first. If the spare starts it, the chip in your primary key is likely damaged, often from a drop or from the key being on a heavy keyring that put stress on the pivot area over time. The remote battery has nothing to do with this. A key with a completely dead CR1616 will still start the car as long as the chip reads correctly.

If neither key works, that points away from the key itself and toward something on the car side, but that is the less common scenario. Start with the spare. That single test tells you almost everything you need to know about where the problem lives.

The pivot pin on my flip key is loose and the blade wobbles. Is that a key problem or a car problem?

Key problem, and a fixable one. The blade hinge on the first-generation RDX flip key is known to wear at the pivot, letting the blade wobble or fail to lock firmly in the open position. When that gets bad enough, the blade can feel sloppy going into the ignition or, in worse cases, not stay extended under normal turning force.

The repair is replacing the key case and pivot pin. Nothing on the car side needs to be touched. If your blade and transponder chip are still good, a case swap is the right move before something breaks inside the ignition cylinder. I have seen people ignore the wobble until the blade snaps mid-turn, and that is a harder and more expensive fix than swapping a housing while everything is still intact.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2011 RDX. Can I program it myself?

Not for the transponder side. The remote functions on some Honda and Acura fobs of this era have an onboard self-programming sequence, but the transponder chip that actually starts the car requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn trick for adding or registering a transponder on this vehicle.

So: you can potentially sync the remote buttons yourself, but the key still will not start the car until the chip is registered by someone with the right tools.
