I met him in Lemonwood Park in Oxnard, parked curbside with the 2020 RDX still wearing the selling dealer's plate frame.
He had just bought it used. One smart key. The seller told him a spare would be easy to get. The Acura dealer told him otherwise and quoted a number that made him go quiet for a second.
His fob was KR580399900, five buttons, CR2032 inside. On this third-gen RDX the keyless access control unit, what Acura calls the KOS module, handles an encrypted Hitag AES handshake between the ID47 chip in the fob and the immobilizer. There is no pedal dance, no ignition cycle trick. It either talks to the right equipment or it does not.
Since he still had one working key, this was a straightforward add-key job. I connected through the OBD port, accessed the immobilizer, and registered his new smart key. Then the part that actually matters: walking each door to confirm the LF proximity antennas picked it up, testing lock, unlock, hatch, remote start, and a pocket start from the button.
He asked what happens if he ever loses both. I told him the all-keys-lost process is a different animal, a full immobilizer reset that wipes every missing fob from memory and takes longer.
He drove off with two working keys and his whole afternoon still ahead of him.
