I got a call out to College Estates in Oxnard for a 2021 Acura RDX. The owner said his smart key was falling apart, which I hear a lot, but when I pulled up and saw it I actually laughed a little.
The fob shell had cracked clean along the seam, the button pad had shifted sideways, and one corner was held together with what looked like electrical tape from a junk drawer.
He said the dealer told him the whole key needed to be replaced, programming and all. He wasn't wrong that it needed work, but the assumption that the electronics were bad just because the shell was beat up, that's where I pushed back.
I popped the housing open on the hood of my van and looked at the board. It was clean. No corrosion, no cracked solder points, no damage from whatever drama that fob had been through. The battery was low, which explained the occasional key-not-detected warning he'd been getting, but the internals were solid.
So I did the sensible thing. New shell, fresh CR2032, original board transferred over. Closed it up and walked every function: lock, unlock, all five buttons, and the start sequence. Checked the dash for any keyless access warning. Nothing came up. The car treated it like a perfectly normal key, because it was.
He'd already accepted the dealer's price in his head as inevitable. The actual number he paid me was a fraction of that, and he didn't have to leave his driveway.
