Extraction Services
Broken key extraction typically runs $75 to $150. If a new key is needed afterward, that’s quoted separately. Full price given on the phone before we dispatch.
Ignition Key Extraction
Key snapped off inside the ignition and the stub is jammed? Do not touch it with pliers. Every attempt pushes the fragment deeper and risks bending the wafers.
Ignition key extraction means removing a broken blade fragment from inside a precision wafer cylinder without damaging the internal components. The cylinder contains spring-loaded wafers that grip the key blade at specific cut depths. When a key breaks, those wafers clamp down on the fragment and resist straight-pull removal.
Key stuck in the ignition? Leave it alone and call us.
Door Lock Key Extraction
Key snapped in the driver’s door lock? Now the cylinder is blocked, you can’t lock the car, and the fragment is wedged inside. We extract without replacing the lock.
Door lock extraction is mechanically similar to ignition extraction but presents different challenges. Door lock cylinders are smaller in diameter, mounted vertically, and exposed to weather. Rain, dust, and salt air corrode the internal wafers and cause binding that leads to breakage under force.
Broken key in the door lock? We extract and restore without replacing the lock.
Trunk Lock Key Extraction
Key snapped in the trunk lock and now the trunk won’t latch properly, or it’s stuck shut with your belongings inside. We get the fragment out and the trunk working again.
Trunk lock extraction combines fragment removal with the access difficulty of trunk-mounted cylinders. Trunk locks sit in a recessed housing that limits tool angle and visibility. The cylinder orientation, typically horizontal or inverted, means gravity works against extraction rather than helping.
Trunk key snapped? We extract the fragment and free your belongings.
Broken Key + New Key Cut
Key broke and you don’t have a spare? We extract the fragment and cut a brand new key from the broken pieces, all in one visit.
This combined service handles both problems in a single appointment: extracting the broken fragment from whichever lock it snapped in, and cutting a completely new key from the recovered pieces or from a direct decode of the lock cylinder. When both halves of the broken key are available, we read the full bitting pattern and cut a precise duplicate.
Broken key, no spare? One visit. We extract and cut a new one.
Cylinder Assessment After Extraction
The key is out, but did the break damage the lock? We inspect the cylinder internals and tell you honestly whether it needs repair or replacement.
After any broken key extraction, the critical question is whether the lock cylinder sustained damage during the break or during whatever happened between the break and when we arrived. A clean break with immediate professional extraction usually leaves the cylinder intact.
After extraction, make sure the lock is still sound.
Preventive Key Inspection
Your key is getting thin, bent, or hard to turn. It’s telling you it’s about to break. Replace it now instead of paying to extract it later.
Preventive key inspection is the cheapest service we offer and potentially the one that saves you the most money. We examine your key blade under magnification for signs of wear: thinning at the shoulder, lateral bending from heavy keychains, rounded or flattened cut edges that indicate the key is no longer making clean contact with the cylinder wafers, and corrosion or pitting from environmental exposure.
Get your key inspected. Five minutes now prevents a breakage later.

How Broken Keys Happen
- Your key snapped in the ignition this morning and half the blade is stuck inside with no way to grip it.
- You forced a stiff door lock in the rain and the key broke off flush with the cylinder.
- The trunk key broke while you were trying to open a lock that hasn’t been used in years, and your bags are trapped inside.
- You already tried to pull the broken piece out with needle-nose pliers and it’s now pushed deeper into the cylinder.
- Your key has been getting progressively harder to turn for weeks, and you can see a visible crack forming at the shoulder of the blade.
