Extraction Services

Broken key extraction typically runs $75 to $150. If a new key is needed afterward, that’s quoted separately. Full price given on the phone before we dispatch.

01

Ignition Key Extraction

Key snapped off inside the ignition and the stub is jammed? Do not touch it with pliers. Every attempt pushes the fragment deeper and risks bending the wafers.

Ignition key extraction means removing a broken blade fragment from inside a precision wafer cylinder without damaging the internal components. The cylinder contains spring-loaded wafers that grip the key blade at specific cut depths. When a key breaks, those wafers clamp down on the fragment and resist straight-pull removal.

02

Door Lock Key Extraction

Key snapped in the driver’s door lock? Now the cylinder is blocked, you can’t lock the car, and the fragment is wedged inside. We extract without replacing the lock.

Door lock extraction is mechanically similar to ignition extraction but presents different challenges. Door lock cylinders are smaller in diameter, mounted vertically, and exposed to weather. Rain, dust, and salt air corrode the internal wafers and cause binding that leads to breakage under force.

$75-$17510-30 min

03

Trunk Lock Key Extraction

Key snapped in the trunk lock and now the trunk won’t latch properly, or it’s stuck shut with your belongings inside. We get the fragment out and the trunk working again.

Trunk lock extraction combines fragment removal with the access difficulty of trunk-mounted cylinders. Trunk locks sit in a recessed housing that limits tool angle and visibility. The cylinder orientation, typically horizontal or inverted, means gravity works against extraction rather than helping.

04

Broken Key + New Key Cut

Key broke and you don’t have a spare? We extract the fragment and cut a brand new key from the broken pieces, all in one visit.

This combined service handles both problems in a single appointment: extracting the broken fragment from whichever lock it snapped in, and cutting a completely new key from the recovered pieces or from a direct decode of the lock cylinder. When both halves of the broken key are available, we read the full bitting pattern and cut a precise duplicate.

Broken key, no spare? One visit. We extract and cut a new one.

05

Cylinder Assessment After Extraction

The key is out, but did the break damage the lock? We inspect the cylinder internals and tell you honestly whether it needs repair or replacement.

After any broken key extraction, the critical question is whether the lock cylinder sustained damage during the break or during whatever happened between the break and when we arrived. A clean break with immediate professional extraction usually leaves the cylinder intact.

$100-$17515-25 min

After extraction, make sure the lock is still sound.

06

Preventive Key Inspection

Your key is getting thin, bent, or hard to turn. It’s telling you it’s about to break. Replace it now instead of paying to extract it later.

Preventive key inspection is the cheapest service we offer and potentially the one that saves you the most money. We examine your key blade under magnification for signs of wear: thinning at the shoulder, lateral bending from heavy keychains, rounded or flattened cut edges that indicate the key is no longer making clean contact with the cylinder wafers, and corrosion or pitting from environmental exposure.

$75-$12510-15 min

Get your key inspected. Five minutes now prevents a breakage later.

How Broken Keys Happen

  • Your key snapped in the ignition this morning and half the blade is stuck inside with no way to grip it.
  • You forced a stiff door lock in the rain and the key broke off flush with the cylinder.
  • The trunk key broke while you were trying to open a lock that hasn’t been used in years, and your bags are trapped inside.
  • You already tried to pull the broken piece out with needle-nose pliers and it’s now pushed deeper into the cylinder.
  • Your key has been getting progressively harder to turn for weeks, and you can see a visible crack forming at the shoulder of the blade.

Broken Key Questions & Answers

Why shouldn’t I try to pull the broken key out myself?
Because the wafers inside the cylinder are gripping the fragment at the cut depths. Pulling straight out with pliers usually pushes the fragment deeper instead of removing it, especially if you can’t get a clean grip on the exposed edge. Twisting with a screwdriver can bend the wafers, which turns a simple extraction into a cylinder repair. The tools we use are specifically designed to slide alongside the fragment and catch the broken edge without pushing it further in.
Can you extract a broken key that’s completely flush with the cylinder?
Yes. When there’s no exposed edge to grip, we use thin extractor hooks and a borescope to visualize the fragment position inside the cylinder. The hook slides past the fragment, catches the broken edge from behind, and walks it out. It takes more time than a fragment with an exposed edge, but the technique works on even deeply seated pieces.
Will the lock still work after extraction?
If the extraction is done properly and the break didn’t damage the internal wafers, yes. We test the cylinder with a working key after every extraction to verify smooth operation. If we find bent wafers, scoring, or debris contamination, we tell you and recommend a repair before the lock causes another problem.
Can you make a new key from the broken pieces?
Yes. If both halves of the key are available, we read the full bitting pattern from the combined pieces and cut a duplicate. If only the fragment is recovered, we decode the remaining cuts with Lishi picks or disassemble the cylinder to read the wafer depths directly. Either way, we cut a factory-spec replacement on the spot.
Why do keys break in the first place?
Wear and stress. Keys thin at the shoulder over years of use. Heavy keychains put lateral torque on the blade while the key is in the ignition. Corrosion from salt air or moisture weakens the metal. Stiff cylinders from lack of lubrication or worn wafers require extra force that a fatigued blade can’t handle. Cold weather stiffens both the cylinder and the metal, and one forceful turn on a cold morning is the most common breaking point.
How much does broken key extraction cost versus just replacing the lock?
Extraction runs $75 to $200 depending on the lock type and how deep the fragment is. A full lock cylinder replacement runs $250 to $375. Extraction is always the first approach because it preserves the existing lock and keeps your current key code. We only recommend replacement if the cylinder is damaged beyond repair.
Should I get a new key made right away, or can I wait?
If the broken key was your only key, you need a new one immediately. If you have a spare, you can wait, but we’d recommend getting the replacement cut during the same visit. The setup is already done, the fragment tells us the bitting pattern, and doing both together saves a second appointment. The broken key snapped for a reason: if your spare is the same age, it may not be far behind.
How do I prevent my key from breaking?
Keep your keychain light. A heavy keychain hanging from the ignition puts constant lateral stress on the blade. Lubricate your locks with graphite once a year. If the key starts feeling stiff or grinds in the cylinder, get the cylinder serviced before the key takes the blame. And if you can see a visible crack, thinning, or bend in the blade, get a replacement cut immediately. A new key costs $50 to $150. An extraction plus replacement costs $150 to $350.
