Remote Start Fob Sync

Remote start fobs talk to a separate module from your lock and unlock system. That's why basic programming doesn't always get them working.

Remote start communicates through a dedicated module that has to be paired independently from your standard keyless entry functions. Programming the fob to lock and unlock the doors doesn't automatically pair the remote start.

Key Fob Programming FAQ

How is fob programming different from car key replacement?

Car key replacement means we supply and cut a new key or fob from scratch, including the physical blade if there is one. Fob programming means we take a fob you already have, or one we supply as a blank, and pair it to your vehicle's computer. If you already have the hardware and just need it activated, this is the service you need.

Can any locksmith program a fob, or does it require specific equipment?

It requires vehicle-specific diagnostic tools. General locksmiths with a basic key machine can't do it. We carry the Autel IM508, AutoProPad, and VVDI2, which between them cover the programming protocols for virtually every make and model on the road. The tool has to speak the same language as the vehicle's ECU, and cheap universal programmers often can't.

How do I know if my fob needs programming or just a new battery?

If the fob stopped working suddenly and the battery is more than two years old, try a new battery first. If the fob still doesn't respond after a fresh battery, or if it works intermittently, it likely needs to be resynced or reprogrammed. If the fob was never paired to your vehicle in the first place, no battery will fix that.

Will programming a new fob erase my existing one?

On many vehicles, yes. The ECU clears its fob memory during a new pairing session and only recognizes fobs programmed in that session. That's why we ask you to bring every working fob you have. We program all of them in one shot so nothing gets erased.

Can you program a fob for a car that's not physically present?

No. The fob has to communicate with the vehicle's ECU through the OBD-II port during programming. There's no way around this. We need to be at the car with the fob in hand. That's the entire reason we're mobile.

Do you guarantee the fob will work after programming?

We test every function before we leave: lock, unlock, trunk release, panic, and remote start if applicable. If something doesn't work, we troubleshoot it on the spot. You don't pay until every button does what it's supposed to do.

What if my aftermarket fob turns out to be incompatible?

We check compatibility before we start programming. If the FCC ID, frequency, or chip type doesn't match your vehicle, we'll tell you before any work begins. If we catch it on arrival, there's no charge for the diagnostic check. We also carry OEM-spec fobs on the truck if you need one on the spot.

How long does it take to program a fob?

Most single-fob jobs take 15 to 30 minutes. Multi-fob sessions run 30 to 45 minutes because each fob has to be registered sequentially. Remote start sync can push closer to 40 minutes on vehicles with separate modules. We give you the time estimate with your quote so you know what to plan for.
