Smart Key Services

Smart keys range from $250 to $450 depending on the vehicle. This includes the fob, cutting the emergency blade, programming, and thorough testing of all functions. Exact price quoted on the phone before we dispatch.

01

Proximity Fob Replacement

Fob went missing or stopped working entirely? The dealer quoted you $400 and a week of waiting. We'll be at your door today.

Proximity fob replacement means pairing a new remote transmitter to your vehicle's body control module so the car recognizes it for passive entry and push-button start. We connect to the OBD-II port using an Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus, authenticate to the immobilizer system, register the new fob token, and verify every function: walk-up unlock, push-start ignition, remote lock, panic, and trunk release.

$200โ€“$40030โ€“45 min

Get your replacement fob programmed today, not next week.

02

Emergency Blade Cutting

Inside every smart key fob there's a hidden metal blade for emergencies. If yours is missing, broken, or was never cut, you have zero backup when the battery dies.

Every proximity fob contains a small mechanical key blade tucked inside the housing, released by a button or sliding latch. It's designed to manually unlock the driver's door when the fob battery dies or the vehicle's receiver malfunctions.

$75โ€“$12510โ€“20 min

Make sure your emergency blade actually works before you need it.

03

Smart Key Battery & Diagnostics

Push-to-start works sometimes but not others? It might be the battery. It might be an antenna, a receiver, or a fob transmitter issue. We figure out which one before you spend money on the wrong fix.

Smart key battery replacement sounds simple, but intermittent proximity issues aren't always a dead CR2032. We start with a full diagnostic: test the fob battery voltage under load, check the fob transmitter output with a frequency counter, verify the vehicle's low-frequency antenna reception at each door handle and trunk lid, and test the in-cabin detection antenna that enables push-button start.

$75โ€“$15015โ€“25 min

Diagnose the real problem instead of swapping batteries and hoping.

04

Smart Key System Reprogramming

Dead battery, computer glitch, or module replacement knocked your fobs offline? The fobs are fine. The system just lost sync and needs to be re-paired.

Smart key systems can lose synchronization between the fob and the vehicle after a dead 12-volt battery, a body control module replacement, or even a failed jump-start that sent a voltage spike through the system. When this happens, the car no longer recognizes any of your existing fobs even though the fobs themselves are perfectly functional.

$150โ€“$30030โ€“45 min

Re-sync your existing fobs instead of buying new ones.

05

All-Keys-Lost Smart Key Recovery

Zero working fobs for a push-to-start vehicle? The dealer says tow it in and wait ten days. We recover it on site.

All-keys-lost on a smart key vehicle is the highest-difficulty automotive locksmith job there is. With no working fob to authenticate, we bypass the immobilizer from scratch: reading the encrypted EEPROM data from the vehicle's immobilizer module, computing a valid cryptographic seed, generating a new key token, and writing it to a blank fob.

$350โ€“$47545โ€“60 min

Lost every key? We recover your smart key system from zero, on site.

06

Multi-Fob Smart Key Setup

Two drivers, three drivers, four drivers. We program every fob in one session so nobody gets erased and nobody gets locked out.

Most modern smart key systems support between three and eight registered fobs simultaneously. Adding multiple fobs in one session is significantly cheaper per unit than programming them individually because the most time-consuming step, establishing the secure OBD-II connection and entering the vehicle's programming mode, only happens once.

$175โ€“$40035โ€“50 min

Set up the whole household in one visit and save.

Common Smart Key Problems

  • Your push-to-start fob stopped being recognized by the car and the dealer wants it towed in for diagnosis.
  • You bought a used vehicle with one fob and the seller swore the second one was "around somewhere."
  • The car sat for two weeks with a dead battery, and now neither fob unlocks or starts the vehicle.
  • You checked the emergency blade slot inside your fob and it's completely empty.
  • Your fob works perfectly at the driver's door but the push-button start takes multiple attempts to engage inside the cabin.

Push-to-Start & Smart Key FAQ

What makes a smart key different from a regular transponder key?
A transponder key physically turns in an ignition cylinder, and its chip communicates with the immobilizer only during the start sequence. A smart key never goes into an ignition. It communicates wirelessly with multiple antennas across the vehicle body for passive entry, and a separate in-cabin antenna confirms its presence before the push-button start will engage. The encryption and pairing protocols are more complex, which is why smart key services cost more and require different diagnostic platforms.
Why is smart key replacement more expensive than a regular key?
Three reasons. The fob hardware costs more than a transponder blank. The programming requires authenticating through a multi-layer encrypted system rather than a simple chip clone. And the verification process is more involved because we test passive entry at every door, push-button start, remote lock and unlock, trunk release, and panic. More components, more steps, higher cost.
Can I buy a smart key fob online and have you program it?
Sometimes. Aftermarket fobs work for certain vehicles if the chip type and frequency match. Others are incompatible regardless of what the listing claims. Send us the part number or listing link before you buy and we'll confirm whether it will work with your vehicle. If you already bought one, bring it and we'll check before we start. If it's not compatible, we carry OEM-spec fobs on the truck.
What happens if I lose my only smart key fob?
That's an all-keys-lost situation, the most expensive and time-consuming key service we offer. Without a working fob to authenticate, we have to bypass the immobilizer from scratch, generate a new cryptographic token, and build the fob from zero. Having a spare made before this happens costs roughly half of what the emergency recovery costs after.
My fob battery just died. Can I still start the car?
Yes. Most push-to-start vehicles have a backup method. On many models, you press the dead fob flat against the start button. A tiny inductive coil in the button powers the fob's chip directly without needing the battery for radio transmission. Other manufacturers hide a reader in the center console or near the steering column. We can walk you through your specific vehicle's method over the phone.
Will programming a new fob erase my existing ones?
On many vehicles, the programming process clears the fob memory and only saves fobs registered during that session. That's why we always ask you to bring every working fob. We program the entire set in one session so nothing gets erased. If you only have one fob left, we register the new one and re-register the old one together.
How do I know if my smart key problem is the fob or the car?
If the fob doesn't work on any door and the push-button start also fails, the fob is the most likely problem. If the fob works on some doors but not others, or works for remote lock but not passive entry, the issue is probably a vehicle antenna or receiver. We diagnose both sides with a frequency counter and antenna test before recommending a fix.
Is the emergency blade inside my fob actually important?
Critically important. When the fob battery dies and you're standing in a parking lot, the emergency blade is the only way into the car. Without it, you're calling for a lockout service on top of whatever fob service you need. The blade takes five minutes and under $125 to cut. The lockout it prevents is a separate charge and a separate wait. Get it cut before you need it.
