Transponder Key Services

Transponder keys typically range from $150 to $250, including cutting and programming. Price depends on the vehicle and chip type. We give you an exact quote on the phone before any work starts.

01

Fixed-Code Transponder Key

Security light flashing every time you start the car? If it goes away after a second, your fixed-code chip is still working. If it stays on, the chip lost its signal.

Fixed-code transponder keys transmit a static ID that the immobilizer reads once and compares against its stored value. The key has to be cut to the correct bitting and the chip has to be cloned or programmed to match the vehicle's stored ID.

$120โ€“$17520โ€“30 min

Tell us your year and make and we'll confirm the chip type before we head out.

02

Rolling-Code / Encrypted Key

Key worked yesterday, won't start the car today? If it's a rolling-code key, the counter may have fallen out of sync with the immobilizer.

Rolling-code and encrypted transponder keys change their signal with every use, which means programming one requires a live OBD-II session to synchronize the key's counter with the vehicle's immobilizer module.

$175โ€“$27530โ€“45 min

Rolling-code programming requires your car present. Call or text to schedule.

03

Carbon Chip (4C/4D) Key

Key looks like a regular metal key with no buttons? If it's a Toyota, Mazda, or Kia from the early 2000s, there's a transponder chip hidden inside that plastic head.

The 4C and 4D transponder chips from Texas Instruments were used in a huge range of Toyotas, Mazdas, and Kias through the early 2000s. The 4C is a fixed-code chip.

$150โ€“$22525โ€“35 min

We stock 4C and 4D chips. Most jobs done same day.

04

Philips Crypto Transponder

Tried to get a copy at a hardware store kiosk and it didn't work? If you drive a Honda, Nissan, or Hyundai, the Philips Crypto chip is probably why.

Philips ID46 and ID47 Crypto chips are used in a wide range of European and Asian vehicles, including many Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai models. These chips use a cryptographic c

Bring the original key if you have it. It speeds up the process significantly.

05

Texas Instruments (TI) Chip Key

Subaru or newer Toyota? Your key almost certainly uses a TI chip, and the specific variant determines how we program it.

Texas Instruments produces several transponder chip variants: TI DST, DST+, and DST80. Each has different programming requirements. The DST80 is used in newer Toyotas and Subarus and requires the VVDI2 or Autel IM508 with a specific license to program.

$150โ€“$25025โ€“40 min

Call or text with your year and model. We'll confirm the TI variant before we come out.

06

All-Keys-Lost Transponder Recovery

No working key at all? That used to mean a tow truck and a dealer visit. Not anymore.

All-keys-lost situations require extracting the immobilizer's PIN code and generating a new key from scratch with no original to clone from. Depending on the platform, we use the Autel IM508's IMMO PIN extractor, the VVDI2's remote key generator, or a combination of both with a CAN-nibal cable to access deeper IMMO data on vehicles with secured modules.

$225โ€“$37545โ€“60 min

All-keys-lost requires your car on-site. Call us and we'll get there fast.

Situations We See Every Day

  • Your key turns the ignition but the engine cranks and won't fire, and the security light stays lit on the dash.
  • You got a key cut at a hardware store and the blade fits the lock perfectly, but the car refuses to start.
  • You're down to one working transponder key and want a backup programmed before it becomes an emergency.
  • Your mechanic replaced the ECU or immobilizer module and now none of your existing keys are recognized.
  • The key you've been using for years suddenly stopped communicating with the car and a new battery in the fob didn't fix it.

Transponder Key Questions Answered

What's the difference between a transponder key and a regular metal key?
A regular metal key is purely mechanical. It turns the lock and the ignition through physical cuts on the blade. A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the head that communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer system. If the chip signal doesn't match, the engine won't start even if the blade turns perfectly. Any car built after the mid-1990s almost certainly uses a transponder.
How do I know which chip type my car uses?
You don't need to. Tell us the year, make, model, and trim, and we identify the exact chip from there. Different manufacturers used different chip families, and sometimes the same model switched chips between model years or trim levels. We carry blanks for all of them.
Can a hardware store duplicate a transponder key?
They can cut the blade, but they can't program the chip. Some kiosk machines claim to clone transponder keys, but they only work on a narrow range of older fixed-code chips. If the machine rejects your key or the copy doesn't start the car, the chip programming is the missing step.
Why does all-keys-lost cost more than a standard transponder key?
When you have a working key, we can read its chip data and clone or reference it to program the new one. When every key is gone, we have to extract the immobilizer PIN from the vehicle's ECU, generate a key code from scratch, and build the new key without any reference point. More steps, more time, more equipment involved.
Will a new transponder key work with my existing alarm or remote start system?
The transponder communicates with the immobilizer, which is separate from aftermarket alarm and remote start systems. Programming a new transponder key won't affect those systems. If your alarm uses a separate fob or module, that pairing is handled independently.
Can I have a transponder key programmed without the car present?
No. The key's chip has to handshake with the vehicle's ECU during programming. That communication happens through the OBD-II port with the car physically present. There's no remote or off-site method. That's the whole reason we drive to your vehicle.
How many transponder keys can my car hold in its system?
Most vehicles accept up to eight transponder keys. Some older models cap at four. We can check your vehicle's limit and tell you how many keys are currently registered before we start, so you know exactly how much capacity you have left.
Is transponder key programming the same thing as key cutting?
No. Key cutting shapes the physical blade so it fits your lock and ignition cylinder. Transponder programming writes the chip's ID to your vehicle's immobilizer so the engine will start. A properly working transponder key requires both: the right blade cut and the right chip programming. We handle both in the same visit.
