Audi uses what they call an immobilizer system. Every Audi key since the early 2000s has a tiny transponder chip embedded in the head. When you insert the key or bring the smart fob near the car, the immobilizer sends a challenge signal to the chip. If the chip responds with the correct encrypted code, the engine starts. If not, nothing. On older Audis this is a Megamos 48 chip. On newer models it is a more advanced encrypted system tied to the BCM2 module. Either way, that chip is why your key costs more than a hardware store copy.
A tax accountant at the dry cleaner in the Sapwi Trails Community Park neighborhood in Thousand Oaks thought only the dealer could handle the "computer part" of his 2003 Audi Allroad key.
