Fiat's immobilizer system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. Every Fiat key since the mid-2000s has a transponder chip embedded in the key head or fob. When you turn the ignition or press start, the car sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip answers with the right encrypted code, the engine runs. If not, the body control module kills fuel injection within seconds. That's why a hardware store copy will turn the ignition but the engine dies immediately.
A retired bus driver at a retirement village near Midtown neighborhood thought only the dealer could program that chip. He had a 2014 Fiat 500l and needed a spare.
