A smart key is different entirely, broadcasting an active 315MHz RF signal (licensed under BSIS LCO#6792 for the security work involved) that talks to antenna modules throughout the cabin for passive entry and push-to-start. One is mechanical turn-to-start with a hidden chip. The other is wireless proximity-based ignition.

EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. It's the chip on the immobilizer control module that stores your key profiles. Standard programming writes new key data through the OBD-II port while the module manages the process. EEPROM programming bypasses that. I pull the module, connect directly to the memory chip on the circuit board, and read or write key data at the hardware level. You need it when all keys are lost on a BMW with a CAS or FEM module, certain Toyota 8A smart key systems, or when the OBD security gateway locks out standard tools.
