Most locksmiths carry a key machine and a few basic transponder cloners. That's almost always a dying coin cell battery inside the fob, not a programming failure. A transponder key has a passive RFID chip inside the plastic head running on 125kHz, powered by the induction coil around the ignition cylinder. You insert, you turn, the coil energizes the chip, and the ECU decides whether to let the engine fire. No battery required. A smart key is different entirely, broadcasting an active 315MHz RF signal that talks to antenna modules throughout the cabin for passive entry and push-to-start. One is mechanical turn-to-start with a hidden chip. The other is wireless proximity-based ignition.

EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. It's the chip on the immobilizer control module that stores your key profiles. Standard programming writes new key data through the OBD-II port while the module manages the process. EEPROM programming bypasses that. I pull the module, connect directly to the memory chip on the circuit board, and read or write key data at the hardware level. You need it when all keys are lost on a BMW with a CAS or FEM module, certain Toyota 8A smart key systems, or when the OBD security gateway locks out standard tools.

Toyota went through three generations. The 4D67 covered most models from 2005 to 2010, including Camry and Corolla. Around 2013 came the H-chip, a 128-bit DST-AES encrypted transponder that's significantly harder to clone. The newest 2020-forward models use the 8A chip tied to proximity smart key operation. Honda ran the ID46 Hitag2 in the Civic, Accord, and Pilot from about 2005 through 2015, then moved to the ID47 Hitag3 for 2016 and newer. All of these run on the 125kHz inductive frequency. The physical blank I cut for a 2015 Toyota Highlander near Westlake Plaza uses the same brass alloy and cut tolerances as the dealer's blank. The transponder chip is the same virgin chip the factory uses. Once I register it to your ECU, the immobilizer doesn't know or care who wrote the data. The programming protocols are identical.
