Over in Sweetwater, near one of the quieter streets off Highland Avenue, I got a call from a retired bus driver who needed a spare key for his 2017 Fiat 500L. He had one working key left and he knew that was a bad spot to be in. His neighbor had used me before and passed along my number.
Before he called me, he had called the dealer. The number they gave him sat in his head like a bad price on a used car. He mentioned it almost apologetically, like he felt guilty for even considering it. He assumed the programming was the expensive part and that only the dealer had access to that process.
When I pulled up, he was sitting on his front step with the original key in his hand, ready to hand it over like I might need it for something. I told him to hold onto it. I walked him through what was actually happening: the blade gets cut to match his lock cylinder, and then the transponder inside the new key head gets registered to his car through the diagnostic port. His immobilizer learns the new key. After that, both keys work independently.
I cut the replacement blade and ran the programming sequence on site. The whole job was done in about 25 minutes. Both keys tested clean on the doors and at the ignition before I packed up.
He was surprised it worked the same as his original. Not more, not less. Just a working spare. The dealer route would have taken a trip, a wait, and a bill that didn't reflect the actual time involved.
