1998 Acura CL Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
In Ventura, down near Ventura Harbor Village, a CL owner called me because his car cranked fine but would not fire. Green key light on the dash just kept flashing at him. He had one black master key left. The gray valet key went missing a year ago. The red learning key, no idea where it was.
That flashing green light means the immobilizer receiver is not reading the Megamos ID 13 chip in the key, so the PCM kills the fuel. The engine turns over all day long but it is never going to start until the transponder signal checks out.
I plugged into the OBD port and ran the immobilizer read. His one remaining black key was still recognized in the system. The transponder chip was fine. The issue turned out to be the immobilizer receiver coil wrapped around the ignition cylinder. The connection had gone intermittent, which is not rare on these first-gen CLs, especially ones that also had the ignition switch replaced under recall 02V120000. That recall fix sometimes disturbs the receiver wiring nearby.
Cleaned and reseated the receiver connector, confirmed a solid read on the transponder, and the car started on the first turn. Then I cut and programmed a spare HD106-PT so he would not be riding on a single key anymore.
He went from almost towing it to the dealer to driving home in about forty minutes.
