Got a call from someone stuck at Pacific View Mall in Ventura. He had been inside one of the stores, came back out, turned the key, and the engine cranked strong but would not catch. Green key icon on the dash just kept blinking at him.
He told me he had been using a copy he got made at a hardware store a while back. Turned the ignition fine. Looked like a normal key. But whoever cut it used a plain metal blank with no transponder chip inside. For a while it worked because he would turn it right after using his original, and the immobilizer window was still open. Once the system timed out and fully re-armed, that chipless copy was dead to the ECU.
I got there, confirmed the green immobilizer light was flashing, and checked his original key. Original had the Megamos ID13 chip, read clean on my programmer. The copy was just bare metal, no glass transponder in the bow at all. Held it up so he could see the difference. He just shook his head.
Cut a new HD106-PT blank to match his original, cloned the ID13 chip value over, and tested both keys through full start cycles. Immobilizer light went solid, engine caught right away each time.
He had been carrying around a key that was always one lucky coincidence away from leaving him stranded. Now he has two that actually talk to the car.
