I was in Lemonwood one evening, parked in front of a house on a quiet street, when the owner walked out holding a broken key. Not lost, not locked inside. Just snapped. The blade had sheared off right at the shoulder, and the bow with the transponder chip was still in his hand. He'd already tried to fish the blade tip out of the ignition himself with a bobby pin, which was well-intentioned and also exactly the wrong move.
First thing I did was get the blade fragment out without damaging the cylinder. That part takes patience. Once it was clear, I pulled the VIN, confirmed the correct key blank, and cut a replacement right there in the van.
The 2000 CL uses a transponder key, so after the cut comes the programming. I connected through the OBD port, ran the sequence, and verified the immobilizer recognized the new key. Test start, confirmed. The whole thing was done before the porch light kicked on.
He told me the dealer wanted him to tow the car in because he had no working key to drive it there. That would have added a tow bill on top of whatever they were going to charge him to stand at a parts counter. He saved a good chunk, didn't move the car an inch, and had a working key the same night he needed it.
