Down in Pierpont, a guy called me because his CL would crank all day and never fire. He described it perfectly without knowing what it meant: "it turns over but nothing happens." That is almost always the immobilizer doing its job on a car with a transponder key system.
When I got there, the green key indicator on the dash was flashing. That flashing pattern is the car's way of saying the receiver did not get a clean read off the chip in the key. Engine management holds fuel. The starter spins. Nothing else happens.
His situation was a little layered. One black master key left. Valet key gone for about a year. Red key, no idea. I plugged into the OBD port and read the immobilizer. The key itself was still registered and the chip read fine when I held it close to the receiver coil with a test tool. That told me the problem was not the key.
On these first-generation CLs, the receiver coil connector at the ignition cylinder is known to work itself loose over time, especially on cars that have had any ignition cylinder work done over the years. The connector had gone intermittent. Not broken, just not making consistent contact.
I reseated it, confirmed a solid chip read, and the car started on the first turn. Then I cut and programmed a spare key blank from the van so he would not be riding on one key anymore.
He went from thinking he needed a tow to the dealer to driving home in about forty minutes. The dealer would have been a multi-day job minimum, and probably started with "we need to diagnose why it won't start" before they even got to the key.
