In Ventura, down near Ventura Harbor Village, a CL owner called because his car cranked strong but would not fire. The green key light on the dash just kept flashing at him. He had one black master key left. The gray valet key disappeared a year ago. The red learning key, no clue.
That flashing green key indicator means the immobilizer receiver is not reading the Megamos ID 13 chip, so the PCM kills fuel delivery. The engine will turn over all day but it is never going to start until the transponder signal checks out.
I plugged into the OBD port and ran the immobilizer read. His one remaining black key was still recognized. The chip was fine. The problem turned out to be the immobilizer receiver coil wrapped around the ignition cylinder. The connection had gone intermittent, which is common on these first-gen CLs. Honda issued recall 02V120000 for ignition switch failures on this generation, and that repair sometimes disturbs the receiver wiring sitting right next to it. His car had the recall work done years ago, and the connector was slightly loose from it.
Cleaned and reseated the receiver connector, got a solid transponder read, and the car started on the first turn. Then I cut and programmed a spare HD106-PT so he would not be down to a single key anymore.
He went from almost calling a tow truck to driving home in about forty minutes.
