In College Park, Oxnard, a CL owner waved me over from a car wash bay and held up her only key like it was made of glass. It would slide into the ignition, but the cylinder would hang up right before the turn.
Before I tear into wafers, I always rule out the electrical side first. The 2003 CL has a known issue with the ignition switch itself, separate from the lock cylinder. Honda TSB 03-005 covers intermittent no-start and stalling complaints tied to the electrical portion of the switch, and there are plenty of Acura forum threads where owners chase a no-crank for weeks before figuring out it was never the key. I did not want to mask that with a fresh cut.
On this one, the feel was pure mechanical. Worn wafers. The dealer path here usually means a full steering column lock assembly swap, part number 06351-S3M-A10, then new keys on top of that, with a wait for parts and a second appointment for programming.
I decoded the cylinder, pulled the worn wafers, replaced them, and cut a clean blade that fit the repaired lock. She watched every wafer come out and line back up. When it turned smooth, she started and shut it off twice, slow, like she was waiting for it to fight back. Then she exhaled and asked me to bag the old wafers so she could show someone what worn-out looks like.
She was braced for the dealer route, but this was a fraction of that hassle.
