In Hollywood Beach, Oxnard, a CL owner flagged me down from a car wash bay holding her only key out like she was presenting evidence. The key would slide into the ignition but hang up just before it would turn, and she had been muscling it for weeks.
Before I start pulling a cylinder apart, I always take a minute on the no-start side first. This generation has a real history of ignition switch issues that can mimic a mechanical problem, and I do not want to cut a clean key and hand it back to a car that still will not start for a different reason. The feel on this one ruled that out fast. It was pure mechanical. The blade had a shallow spot worn into it, and the cylinder wafers had been chasing that groove long enough to go soft.
The dealer path on these is typically a full steering lock and ignition lock assembly replacement, then key cutting and programming on top of that. I decoded the cylinder instead, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a key that actually matched what the lock was supposed to see.
She watched the whole thing. Every wafer came out, got sorted on the fender cover, and went back in the right order. When the key turned smooth, she started the car and shut it off, then started it again slow, like she was waiting for it to change its mind. Then she asked me to bag the old wafers so she could show someone what worn looks like. She already knew what the dealer would have charged. This was a fraction of that.
